Illustrated with fourteen plates hors-texte by Mariette Lydis 1890-1970 with bandeaux and culs-de-lampe by Sylvain Sauvage1888-1948 who in the mid-twenties became his own publisher and made a name for himself as an illustrator and decorator of considerable style. Skinner 1858-1942 was a leading actor of his day and although he played roles in various French dramas he never played Cyrano. An uncommon book and the basis for two movies: the 1950 version starring Jose Ferrer and the 1990 version starring Gerard Depardieu. Ferrer won an Academy award for his portrayal of Cyrano and the 1990 movie received five nominations including ones for Depardieu and for Best Foreign Film. Fine copy. 2 volumes each with a cloth dust wrapper in a double 1/2 morocco slipcase.<br/><br/> The French edition bears a presentation from Rostand with an initialed postscript and an initialed ink drawing of a figure in uniform with a sword. The American edition has three presentations to the same indefatigable collector: a 6 line inscription from Louis Parker the translator dated 1901 Rostand who compliments the translator in 1902 and Maude Adams who was in the cast of the New York production in 1904.
