The title ‘Le Douanier’ translates as ‘the customs officer’ referring to Rousseau’s place of employment thus highlighting the contrast between the relative banality of his occupation and his creative genius which generally went unrecognized in his lifetime. This lavish 1957 reprint consists of only 150 copies this being #11 of only 50 copies within the larger limitation of 150. Crisp and bright and Near Fine with all of the plates including their original tissue-guards. Loose signatures as issued housed within an off-white printed dustjacket which shows just a touch of very light white spotting at the panels. And the entire work housed inside of the publisher's printed cardboard chemise which shows a degree of wear along the outer hinges.
