Fez um rápido progresso no Exército e distinguiu-se na Guerra Peninsular. Destacado para serviço no Exército Português foi intendente geral e chefe do estado-maior de William Carr Beresford. Foi-lhe atribuÃdo o comando de uma brigada de cavalaria portuguesa consistindo nos 1º 11º e 12º Regimentos de Cavalaria e servindo em todos os principais cercos e batalhas com especial relevo para a Batalha de Salamanca. Foi agraciado com grandes honras incluindo Cavaleiro da Grande Cruz da Ordem do Banho Cavaleiro Comandante da Real Ordem Guelfica e Comendador da Ordem Portuguesa da Torre e Espada. Recebeu a Cruz de Ouro do Exército e cinco outras condecorações pela participação nas batalhas de Bussaco Albuera Badajoz Salamanca Vitoria Pirinéus Nivelle Nive e Toulouse.</p>_x000d_<p>Enveredou depois pela diplomacia em 1819 e foi sucessivamente governador de Antigua Guiana Inglesa e Colónia britânica do Cabo. Na Ãfrica do Sul participou nas guerras fronteiriças do Cabo onde repeliu as investidas dos Xhosa anexando territórios e ocupando o Natal tornando-o mais uma colónia britânica. Para comemoração o principal porto local foi renomeado em sua honra dando origem à cidade de Durban. Em 1847 aceitou o posto de Comandante das forças de Sua Majestade na América do Norte Britânica perto de Montreal no Canadá onde permaneceu até à sua morte em 1849.</p> I-36-C-10 unknown
