Volumes one is the second edition volume two the fourth edition volume three is the first edition and volume four the second edition. Volume three catchword misprinted A for As as called for. Scarce in any early edition. Endpapers and blanks renewed to volumes one and three. As stated on the title pages of volumes one and two they had intended to be a complete story within themselves. However due to the instant success of the works going through five editions in its first year and prompting the release of many counterfeit sequels imitators and parodies Richardson chose to write two more volumes. 'Pamela' or 'Virtue Rewarded' tells of a beautiful 15 year old Pamela working as a maidservant under inappropriate master Mr B. Though it was a bestseller when published it's received criticism over time for it's seeming glorification of abuse. It's been referenced widely in literature including in 'Jane Eyre' and 'The Haunting of Hill House'. First published in 1740 this is considered to be one of the first true English novels. It was immensely popular and widely read however Richardson did receive criticism for its contents for its perceived licentiousness and disregard for class barriers. 'Pamela' is notable for its early commentary on domestic violence and the social issues of the Georgian era told through the eyes of the naive Pamela in her letters to her parents. Rebacked with contemporary calf boards preserved. Externally smart with marks to the boards and bumping to the extremities. Endpapers and blanks renewed to volumes one and three. Contemporary ink inscriptions to paste downs and preliminaries of all volumes. Internally firmly bound. Loss to extremity of leaf B slightly affecting the text. He studied at the Brighton College of Art before moving to London to work as a lettering artist and typographer for advertising agencies later becoming the head of Birmingham School of Printing. The illustration comprises 21 fine figures the first 13 by Eisen and the last 8 by Pasquier. Each volume contains two parts with separate title pages except for the supplement volume which contains in addition to Diderot's essay the parts of the work that had been cut by Prévost. The first complete English edition dates from 1748. Contemporary full marbled brown calf bindings. Smooth spines elegantly decorated. Red morocco title labels and tan morocco volume labels only volume VII of the supplement published in 1761 in uniform binding has a black morocco volume label. Triple gilt fillet frame on boards. Clarisse Harlove is the second great novel published by the author after the immense success of Pamela; it is again a sentimental novel whose virtuous heroine finds herself constrained by her family to marry a noble ugly and obese man against her will. She will flee with one Lovelace the very type of elegant villainous and deceitful libertine who desires to constrain her body and soul leading her into social and moral decline but this will be without counting on Clarisse's virtuous qualities. If the novel from a modern perspective suffers from sentimentalism and length it nonetheless remains true that the construction of the plot the dramatic twists and the psychology will durably mark European literature. Diderot will proclaim this in his Éloge de Richardson and numerous authors will claim it or undergo its influence: Rousseau Jane Austen Choderlos de Laclos. The work will enjoy immense success and even if due to its length the novel is little read today it remains one of the most emblematic books of 18th century literature. It should be noted that Diderot's essay in addition to the praise given to Richardson is a true plea for a new realistic literature his thesis joining that which he wrote for the theater. Samuel Richardson 1689 - 1761 was an English writer and printer known for his epistolary novels. He printed almost 500 works including journals and magazines working periodically with the London bookseller Andrew Millar. Richardson had been apprenticed to a printer whose daughter he eventually married. He lost her along with five sons but remarried and had four daughters who reached adulthood but had no male heirs to continue the print shop. Very Good binding. 8vo.; in an attractive later binding of red half-goat over marbled boards with raised bands with morocco label lettered vertically; with marbled endpapers; 2 49 1 pages.~~A note on this rather interesting binding: we assume that the binder was charged with binding a group of different books to a uniform size -- the title page is trimmed and mounted and all the other leaves are folded neatly to fit the bottom edge and then the leading edge over it. Rather astonishing actually.~~This is Ritson’s first book in which he attacks Thomas Warton’s History of English Poetry in such vitriolic tones -- Warton is a pretender a cheater and a liar -- as to cause quite a contretemps in late 18th century English literary circles. One assumes this actually pleased Ritson as he went on the next year to attack Samuel Johnson and George Steevens. Eventually Ritson went complete mad barricading himself in his rooms at Gray’s Inn and setting fire to a pile of manuscripts. Very Good binding. J. Stockdale; R. Faulder unknown

This appears to be the first edition to be fully illustrated as previous editions presented only four frontispieces however it should be noted that the figures bear the date 1742. We know that Diderot was unstinting in his praise of this novel. Pamela is a novel of manners and a sentimental novel whose impact on 18th-century literature is indelible and enduring. Shelved above WWI. Samuel Richardson 1689 - 1761 was an English writer and printer known for his epistolary novels. He printed almost 500 works including journals and magazines working periodically with the London bookseller Andrew Millar. Richardson had been apprenticed to a printer whose daughter he eventually married. He lost her along with five sons but remarried and had four daughters who reached adulthood but had no male heirs to continue the print shop.
