SIGNED BY EMBRY ON FRONTISPIECE. Bright copy of one of the earliest and most popular RAF escape stories of WWII, published just a month after the first edition. Shot down near St. Omer, Embry made his return to England via Spain just nine weeks and five days later. He subsequently commanded 2 Group Bomber Command, and although ranked Air Vice Marshal flew several operations under the name 'Wing Commander Smith'. His Mosquitos were renowned for their skill and accuracy in precision daylight bombing, and he would have led personally Operation JERICHO - the raid on Amiens prison in February 1944 (in which his substitute Pickard was killed) - had higher authority not ordered him to stand down. Post-war, Embry served as Commander-in-Chief Fighter Command from 1949 to 1953. SIGNED COPIES ARE EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE. We are told that this copy was signed by Embry for Wing Commander Tom 'Ginger' Neil (Battle of Britain ace and RAF test pilot), but there is no formal evidence to this effect. The map entitled "Shewing the Discoveries Made by British Officers in the Arctic Regions from the Year 1818 - 1826" bears coloured lines which presumably indicate the routes travelled - we are not sure if these are original or were added by the prior owner. This catalog was prepared to accompany the exhibition 'Picasso's Women: Fernande to Jacqueline a Tribute to John Richardson' at the Gagosian Gallery in New York from May 3 to June 29, 2019. John Richardson (1924- 2019) an art historian and intimate friend of Picasso and his wives and children, had recently passed away in March of 2019. The exhibition explored one of Richardson's favorite themes: how Picasso's portraits of his women, wives, mistresses and friends, illuminated his art and his creative process in general. Foreword by Larry Gagosian. Well known texts by John Richardson are reproduced here. Illustrated in color with many reproductions of Picasso's paintings and sculptures of women, and vintage photographs of these women: Fernande Olivier, Olga Kohkhlova Picasso, Sara Murphy, Marie-Therese Walter, Dora Maar, Francoise Gilot, Sylvette David and Jacqueline Roque Picasso.
