A modern impression printed on hand-made wove paper with wide margins and in excellent condition. Thomas M. Richardson was a Newcastle-based artist who began his career as an engraver of local views. From 1818 he exhibited paintings in several places in London including the Royal Academy. Views of his native city and its environs were a staple of his output. In this view we can identify several buildings which still stand: the neoclassical Moot Hall with its porticoed entrance and the Castle Keep behind it. Toward the center of the composition the neo-Gothic spire of St. Nicholas' church now cathedral rises above a terrace of houses. unknown books

It provides a short history of the subject "the lethal process" a table of anesthetic gases and vapors showing their chemical properties and 5 figures illustrating lethal chamber used in the euthanasia of animals. Richardson "spent many years in attempts to relieve pain among men by discovering and adapting substances capable of producing general or local anaesthesis and among animals by more humane methods of slaughter. He brought into use no less that fourteen anaesthetics of which methylene bichloride is the best known and he invented the first double-valved mouthpiece for use in the administration of chloroform. He also produced local insensibility be freezing the part with an ether spray and he gave animals euthanasia by means of a lethal chamber." DNB Vol. XXII Supplement p. 1170. Sir Benjamin Richardson contributed widely to the history of medicine whose important work Disciples of Aesculapius was published in 1900. Two separate indexes to the various receipts follow the text of their respective sections. "A farrier is a specialist in equine hoof care including the trimming and balancing of a horse's hoof and the placing of shoes to the horse's foot. A farrier couples a subset of the blacksmith's skills fabricating adapting and adjusting metal shoes with a subset of veterinary medicine knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the lower limb to address the care of the horse's feet. At one time farrier and blacksmith were all but synonymous. A farrier's work in colonial America or pre-Industrial Revolution Europe would have included horseshoeing as well as the fabrication and repair of tools the forging of architectural pieces etc. Today farriers usually specialize in horseshoeing focusing their time and effort on the care of the horse's foot. For this reason farriers and blacksmiths are considered to be in separate albeit related trades. A farrier's routine work is primarily hoof trimming and shoeing. In ordinary cases it is important to trim each hoof so that it retains its proper orientation to the ground. If the animal has a heavy work load works on abrasive footing needs additional traction or has pathological changes in the foot then shoes may be required. Additional tasks for the farrier include dealing with injured and/or diseased hooves and application of special shoes for racing training or 'cosmetic' purposes. In cases of horses with certain diseases or injuries special remedial procedures may be needed for the hooves and then special shoes may need to be constructed and fitted. The introduction recounts how the author came to write the story: his grandfather was a participant in the events depicted and Richardson heard of them at his grandmother's knee. Richardson spent his early life in Detroit while his father served with Simcoe's Rangers and later served there during the War of 1812. Richardson the noted naturalist accompanied Franklin on his first and second expeditions with the rare folding map not present in all copies. The present work includes the journals of Richardson and Rae on the Mackenzie Arctic and Coppermine rivers in 1849. "Filled with details of personal experiences of Indian life. The appendix contains a comparative table of dialects spoken by the Eskimo" - Sabin. Richardson did not limit himself to searching for Franklin and looked for plants and animals as well. An appendix of almost ninety pages comprises one of the earliest detailed listings of Canadian and Arctic plants as well as describing the physical geography of the Arctic. A number of contributors have provided material on the linguistics of the Indians of the region. Most of the attractive plates illustrate members of the Kutchin tribe of native Indians.
