Richardson 1879-1959 was a British physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1928 for his work on thermionic emission which led to Richardson's law. He was professor at Princeton University from 1906 to 1913 and returned to the UK in 1914 to become Wheatstone Professor of Physics at King's College London where he was later made director of research. "Miss Currer continually added to her collection and found it necessary to have a new 'Catalogue' compiled by Mr. C.J. Stewart. One hundred copies of this handsome volume were printed in 1833 for private circulation. It contains four steel engravings representing the book-rooms and outside of the house; two may be seen in Dibdin's works.The catalogue is admirably arranged after a modification of Hartwell Horne's system of classification and has a good alphabetical index. It is a model catalogue of a private library and is now rare and much sought after. Miss Currer's library.contained many rarities. It was rich in natural science topography antiquities and history. It provides a short history of the subject "the lethal process" a table of anesthetic gases and vapors showing their chemical properties and 5 figures illustrating lethal chamber used in the euthanasia of animals. Richardson "spent many years in attempts to relieve pain among men by discovering and adapting substances capable of producing general or local anaesthesis and among animals by more humane methods of slaughter. He brought into use no less that fourteen anaesthetics of which methylene bichloride is the best known and he invented the first double-valved mouthpiece for use in the administration of chloroform. He also produced local insensibility be freezing the part with an ether spray and he gave animals euthanasia by means of a lethal chamber." DNB Vol. XXII Supplement p. 1170. Sir Benjamin Richardson contributed widely to the history of medicine whose important work Disciples of Aesculapius was published in 1900. William Richardson was born at the Manse in Aberfoyle Stirling Scotland on 1 October 1743 the first son of the Rev. James Richardson. He received his MA from the University of Glasgow Scotland in 1763 and attended a few sessions in Divinity before abandoning the idea of entering the Church. For four years he was tutor to the sons of Lord Cathcart and then secretary to His Lordship while Ambassador at St Petersburg. He became Professor of Humanity at the University of Glasgow in 1773 a post he held until 1814. His published writings include the following: Poems; Analyses of Shakespeare's characters; a tragedy; a lyrical drama; Anecdotes of the Russian Empire; contributions to The Lounger The Mirror and The Edinburgh Magazine and Review; and an essay on Celtic Superstition.
