A remarkable portrait of Lord Grosvenor's Pangloss by the master equine painter George Stubbs.<br/> <br/> George Stubbs is considered to be one of the greatest English painters. His ingenious animal and sporting pictures remain unrivalled in their passionate depiction of emotion and their commitment to naturalistic observation. Stubbs was briefly apprenticed to the painter Hamlet Winstanley a relationship that quickly ended leaving the young artist to his own education. In contrast to contemporary academic theory Stubbs attached great importance to the belief that art should imitate nature not the work of other artists. He spent years carefully studying human and equine anatomy so that he could truthfully represent natural form and movement. A result of this study was his famous Anatomy of the Horse which details with beautiful engraving the various elements of a horse's anatomy from skeletal form to muscular definition. By the 1760's Stubbs had developed a considerable reputation as a sporting artist and had attracted a number of distinguished patrons. Continuing in search of innovation Stubbs began experimenting with a myriad of different mediums becoming accomplished in both enamels and printmaking. Through arduous application he became a talented mezzotint engraver and worked with ease in both soft ground and etching techniques. Stubbs' masterful paintings inspired some of the greatest engravers of the day to reproduce his work for publication including his own son George Townly Stubbs who reproduced with faithful accuracy the sublime emotion inherent in his father's exquisite works. Stubbs was elected Director of the Society of Artists and a Royal Academician and today his prized paintings are housed in some of the finest museums in the world. Stubbs was often commissioned to paint accurate portraits of specific racehorses for proud aristocratic patrons who wished to highlight their horses' racing success. This practice is expertly exemplified with this magnificent print of Pangloss Lord Grosvenor's beloved horse. Pangloss was foaled in 1755 and named after a character in Voltaire's Candide; little is known about Lord Grosvenor's horse apart from the fact that his racing career was ended by a broken leg. This print was the second of a series of engraved horse portraits begun by the publisher Ryland in 1771 and extended by Robert Sayer in 1777. Francesco Melzi Da Vinci's student compiled the text from his master's notebooks. He titled it <i>Trattato della pittura</i> and is now known as the <i>Codex Urbinas 1270</i>. The manuscript remained unpublished until 1651 when an Italian and a French edition appeared simultaneously at Giacomo Langlois Paris. This was accompanied with illustrations by Nicolas Poussin including a reproduction of the Mona Lisa and a portrait of Da Vinci. Most plates depict instructive models to learn the different disciplines of painting. The second French edition was published in 1716 in octavo titled <i>Traité de la Peinture par Léonard de Vinci</i>. This was illustrated with new plates copied after those in de first edition. The present third French edition has the exact same illustrations as the second edition indicating that the copper plates from the second edition were reused. The text of the present third edition is enlarged with a biography of Da Vinci in the preliminaries. A smart set of this curious epistolary novel about a Turkish spy who lived for forty years in the court of Louis XIV. Complete in eight volumes.Illustrated with a frontispiece to Volume I.The twenty-sixth edition.'Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy' is an eight volume collection of fictional letters claiming the authorship to be an Ottoman spy named 'Mahmut' in the French court of Louis XIV.The letters cover the period of 1637 to 1683 from the final years of the Regency of Anne of Austria to the long reign of Louis XIV. As a narrator Mahmut gossips about contemporary politics and the society of the court. These observations include looks at the Cardinals Richelieu and Mazarin. This was a very popular work when first published admirers including Daniel Defoe who wrote his own 'Continuation of Turkish Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy in Paris' in 1718 which covered the period of 1687 to 1693. Volume I was written by Giovanni Paolo Marana a political refugee to the French court of Louis XIV. The subsequent seven volumes were first written in English and appeared between 1691 and 1694. There has been controversy regarding the authorship of the seven later volumes; the most notable of those attributed to the text are William Bradshaw and Robert Midgely who produced the original English translation. 17207070Amsterdam 1720. Copper engraving 30 x 23.5 cms black and white elaborate engraved border Dutch text beneath; generous margins blank verso. A Dutch fools cap map satirising the bursting of the financial bubbles of 1720. Cartographic features are given punning names such as the River Bubble the Island of Despair and the town of Madmandam but the real Rivers Thames Seine and Meuse are also marked drawing attention to the scenes of the greatest folly. In Britain the South Sea Company folded wiping out inumberable fortunes after a period of intesnse speculation. In France colourful Scottish financier John Law won the confidence of the Duke of Orleans then Regent of France and was permitted to set up the Mississippi Company which controlled all trade with Frances vast and largely unexplored American possessions - believed to be rich in gold and silver. He established the Royal Bank and issued paper money based on the supposed value of shares in the company. Eventually he was minting French coinage collecting taxes and largely controlling the French economy. The value of the shares soared the French economy boomed more paper notes were issued and after a period of wild speculation confidence collapsed ruining investors throughout Europe. The imaginary mad-head island depicted by the engraver in a sea of shares and inhabited by shareholders discovered by Mr Law-rens has an asss ears and wears a fools cap.
