An interesting Bay Area piece of ephemera the ribbon commemorated the 40th Christian Endeavor Convention in Berkeley California. The organization being the first national church youth one was founded in 1881 in Portland Maine by the well-known clergyman Francis Edward Clark 1851 â 1927. Considered the forerunner of the modern denominational "youth fellowship" it began with as just a small group of youth but by 1906 it had over four million members. A beautiful advertising brochure for the LA landmark with a rich history. Exposition Park was originally created in 1872 as a 160-acre agricultural park. It received its current name in 1913. The 4 original tenants anchoring the park and advertised here were the National Armory the National History Museum the California Museum of Science and Industry and the Sunken Garden later renamed the Rose Garden. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Exposition Park is home to the Los Angeles Raiders the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Dodgers and the University of Southern Californiaâs Trojans and The Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena was the cite of John F. Kennedyâs acceptance speech at the 1960 Democratic National Convention. Hart 1911-1990 was an American literary scholar and professor at UC Berkeley for fifty-four years; he is perhaps best known for his work "The Oxford Companion to American Literature".<br/><br/>This work is "From an Anonymous Eighteenth-Century Broadside Printed in Virginia" and extolls the joys of keeping a "Merrie Christmas": "Now Christmas comes 'tis fit that we / Should feast and sing and merry be / Keep open House let Fiddlers play / A Fig for Cold sing Care away / And may they who thereat repine / On brown Bread and on small Beer dine." <br/><br/>This pamphlet lavishly illustrated by Victor R. An unspecified but evidently revised draft of this unattributed screenplay. The film is a bit of mystery and may not have been produced. There are press announcements of its having begun production and then the MPPDA Digital Archive indexes correspondence from Will Hays ca. June 1930 to Albert Harry and Jack Warner taking issue with the marketing in VARIETY of what is promoted as their "Sex-Appeal Sextette" of which this title was #3 coupled with the likes of DIVORCE AMONG FRIENDS EX MISTRESS THE MATRIMONIAL BED A SOLDIER'S PLAYTHING and THE OFFICE WIFE. The tagline for this film was "A Modern Casanova who Believed One Wife was a Good Reason for Ten Sweethearts." Several of the other films in the series were completed even if now "lost' but this property seems to have disappeared without a trace. The authorship of the copy of the script in the Warner Bros. Ad 1 priapus: 300 x 250 mm frame size 198 x 140 mm visible 147 x 93 mm size of illumination. Ad 2 she-devil: 306 x 231 mm frame size 205 x 140 mm visible 150 x 83 mm size of illumination. Sold as a pair. Two weird erotic Indian illuminations the likes of which we have never before encountered and are unlikely to encounter again. <br/><br/>Popular in Roman decorative art the winged priapus is uncommon in Indian iconography. Our illumination is of particularly high quality and depicts a beautiful Indian woman riding a reined priapus perhas twice her size. The priapus is depicted with avain feet and giant wings. The environment is like a strange dream: in the foreground a grey pool with pink flowers; behind are dark green hills with eerie trees and vegetation. In the sky at sunset are what appear to be rain clouds touched in white. We have been unable to transcribe the text but there is writing on the verso. <br/><br/>The second illumination depicts a grotesque she-devil with fangs horns and a long tongue naked save for pearls around her wrists ankles and biceps. Above her waist her speckled skin is light purple and below dark green. The monster clutches to a strange tree on which four priapus grow and with it engages in sexual relations. She reaches toward a basket of several other priapus which are positioned on an upper branch. As with the accompanying illumination in the foreground we find a watery pool and pink flowers and dark green hills studded by surreal trees. The setting is at twilight. <br/><br/>HIGHLY CURIOUS AND MUST BE SEEN TO BE FULLY APPRECIATED. unknown books

A fascinating glimpse into the off-duty life of US soldiers in Japan in the aftermath of the Second World War the collection features various pamphlets and leaflets in English and apparently hastily assembled and produced advertising strip clubs and bars serving the American forces with most of them riddled with grammar and vocabulary errors for example: "Club Butterfly. Most Best Night Spot in the Tony Tokyo Enjoy Your Self! Charming Girl's Waiting for You! The Burlesque Show Several Times Nitely." Also prominently displayed are several cartoons with provocative and risqué captions a 100-Yen banknote signed by the members of the platoon photographs including one of a severe-looking Japanese lady subtitled: "Yo - Yo The Queen of Itazuma." 19190032531919. Cloth. Very Good. Patriotic World War One poem "The Man who Keeps his Head" illuminated with exquisite vignettes. Oblong 24.5 by 31 cm. With eight plates including title page plus painted vignette on final leaf. These vignette watercolors four to eight per page depict the diversity of British experience whether its variety of industry its trades its modes of farming its ships etc. The effect is panoramic and epic a visual equivalent to Noel Coward's sweep in "Cavalcade" say. Framing it all are Art Nouveau devices and ornament very much true to the period. The book was easily of publishable quality and its creation demonstrates that a strain of patriotism and optimism somehow withstood the bitterness and cynicism engendered by the war.
