1900001640Coney Island NY: Feltman's 1900. Softcover. First edition n. d. ca 1900; 5 plain brown stiff card stock pieces original pictorial envelope. Puzzle pieces with various length and shape from approx. 1" to 2" in fine condition. Envelope a bit brittle with a horizontal cut running to upper margin flap still holding; instructions printed in the lower half; good to very good condition. An unusual promotional piece for what was once an iconic Coney Island restaurant. In 1867 Charles Feltman owned a pie-wagon and delivered freshly baked pies to the various saloons and eateries along the beach on Coney Island. Seeing that his customers also wanted savory sandwiches in addition to the sweet desserts he asked the wheelwright who had built his wagon to outfit it with a tin-lined chest to keep bread rolls fresh and a small charcoal stove to boil sausages. The hot dog was born. Feltman's invention did not go unchallenged but despite rumors that he used dogs' and dead horses' meat for his sausages his hot dogs became so popular by 1874 he had his own restaurant. Feltman's greeted almost a million customers in the first decade of the 20th century and its all time record was serving 100 000 people and 40 000 hot dogs in a single day. The Great Depression put the breaks on the success of the restaurant not because of the food but because people could not afford the subway ride let alone the price of a meal at Feltman's. Charles' sons sold the restaurant in 1946. The puzzle an entertaining advertisement piece when completed presumably made the letters F and T and an upward arrow.
