An interesting Bay Area piece of ephemera the ribbon commemorated the 40th Christian Endeavor Convention in Berkeley California. The organization being the first national church youth one was founded in 1881 in Portland Maine by the well-known clergyman Francis Edward Clark 1851 â 1927. Considered the forerunner of the modern denominational "youth fellowship" it began with as just a small group of youth but by 1906 it had over four million members. With an ink inscription to the front endpaper that reads "J. F. from E. F. Xmas 1908." a presentation from the author Elizabeth Fowler to her brother Reverend Joseph Thomas Fowler. Illustrated with a frontispiece and seven plates. Collated complete. A detailed description and collection of notes from the author's time spent in their old-fashioned garden with tips for growing and accounts of the changes through the seasons. An index to the work tipped-in to the rear pastedown. Written by Elizabeth Fowler. In the original green cloth binding. Externally smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot and light age toning to the endpapers. Further spotting to the first and last few pages. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown contemporary ink and pencil inscriptions to the endpapers and a sticker to the front endpaper with an index to the work tipped-in to the rear pastedown. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Exposition Park is home to the Los Angeles Raiders the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Dodgers and the University of Southern California’s Trojans and The Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena was the cite of John F. Kennedy’s acceptance speech at the 1960 Democratic National Convention. Also included in the brochure were several miniature illustrations of various building and points of interest in the park as well as information on accessibility by car and public transportation.
