Levy 1929-1995 was a legal scholar and teacher whose speciality was constitutional law and the U.S. Supreme Court. He was also great admirer of and expert on the decisions of Justice Benjamin Cardozo who served from 1932-1938. Black nominated to the Supreme Court by President Franklin D. Roosevelt served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1937 to 1971. Cardozo and Black differed famously over the issue of whether the 14th Amendment "incorporated" the Bill of Rights and made it binding upon the states. unknown books

A member of the Democratic Party Black represented Alabama in the United States Senate from 1927 to 1937 and served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1937 to 1971. Black was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 63 to 16 6 Democratic Senators and 10 Republican Senators voted against him. He was first of nine Roosevelt nominees to the Court2 and he outlasted all except for William O. Douglas.3 Black is widely regarded as one of the most influential Supreme Court justices in the 20th century. unknown books

Attractively framed with a photographic print and a typed letter that is unsigned. The handwritten letter is dated February 24th 1969 and is of a most curious topic. Justice Black is complying regarding a request from Professor Ovid Lewis for a sample of his handwriting for the purpose of it being analyzed by a graphologist.
