First edition third issue of Hugo's first great success as a novelist The Hunchback of Notre-Dame in a fine retrospective binding by René Aussourd. Though styled the "Troisème Édition" on the title-page this is in fact the third issue of the first edition. The entire edition consisted of four separate issues of 275 copies each with each issue designated as a separate edition on the title-page. <br/><br/>Notre-Dame de Paris is more commonly known in English as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame the title under which the first English translation by Frederic Shoberl appeared in 1833. Set in 15th-century Paris the novel introduces a memorable cast of Romantic characters; some such as the hunchback Quasimodo and the gypsy girl Esmérald have so permeated our culture that they've reached the status of archetypes. Hugo hoped that his novel would reverse the sad neglect of Gothic architecture in his country much of which had fallen into ruin or been brutally altered. Indeed Hugo created a depiction of Notre-Dame "so erudite and familiar that it caused a revolution in architectural taste. The success of this darkly moving novel was immediate establishing Hugo as the premier historical novelist of his time" Oxford Companion to Literature in French.<br/><br/>In a fine retrospective French romantic binding by René Aussourd recalling the work of Simier or Thouvenin. Aussourd studied under his uncle Charles Meunier and was first gilder at Chambolle-Duru before starting his own business in 1912 Devauchelle III p. 243. 1862122855Bruxelles: Lacroix Verboeckhoven & Ce 1862. Rare first printing of this classic work of literature published in Brussels on the 30th or 31st March 1862. Octavos 10 volumes bound into 5 bound in contemporary full morocco gilt titles and tooling to the spine all edges gilt marbled endpapers. From the library of painter George Cooke with his bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Cooke was a painter who specialized in portrait and landscape paintings and was one of the South's best known painters of the mid nineteenth century. In very good condition. A nice example with noted provenance. Victor Hugo's "great novel has been hailed as a masterpiece of popular literature an epic poem in prose about God humanity and Hugo. Hugo hoped that Les Miserables would be one of if not the 'principal summits' of his body of works. Despite its length complexity and occasionally unbelievable plot and characterization it remains a masterpiece of popular literature. It anticipates Balzac in its realism but in its flights of imagination and lyricism its theme of redemption and its melding of myth and history it is uniquely Hugo" Dolbow 149 214. Charles E. Wilbour was hired by the Carleton Publishing Company to translate Hugo's grand masterpiece and he did so very quickly allowing the first American edition to be published within months of its French release. The intense advertising campaign waged by Carleton resulted in massive sales for Les Miserables solidifying Hugo's epic in second place behind only Uncle Tom's Cabin in pre-Civil War American book sales. Illustrated half title and initials. Printed in only 200 numbered copies of which this is Nr. 145. Printed on handmade thick paper with watermark of the Insel Verlag. Printed in red and black throughout with elaborate artistic layout on Alfred Walter HeymelÃs commission by Otto von Holten. In publisherÃs vellum with the inner edges stamped in repeating gilt design. A remarkable copy one of the nicest we have seen of this incomparable classic with the stiff vellum boards nearly perfect with no warping whatsoever. Small wear to edge of front panel a few brown stains to endpapers. Copious notes in pencil about the edition and old auction records on the verso of the front endpaper. Old presentation inscription on first blank leave. Inside clean and bright and overall in fine condition. One of the most beautiful early publications of Insel with illustrations by Heinrich Vogeler. VogelerÃs title page for "Der Kaiser" HofmannstahlÃs lyrical one act play is considered the peak of German Art Nouveau and also one of his masterpieces. 186563086In the field North Carolina 1865. Detailed manuscript map of a large portion of eastern North Carolina. Pen-and-ink manuscript map on glazed cotton of a large portion of the eastern North Carolina theater in the spring of 1865 17 3/4 x 22 inches from just east of Williamston and Murfreesboro on the east to just west of Chalk Level on the Cape Fear and West Point on the west and from just south of Goldsboro on the south to the North Carolina-Virginia state line on the north despite the title no land area of Virginia is included. The cartographer has shown the area in rich detail the rivers especially the Meherrin Roanoke Tar Neuse and Cape Fear creeks streams and swamps in blue ink and watercolor railroads and primary roadways in bold black ink place names swamps and other features in thin black ink and the intricate pattern of local roads are given in red ink; virtually all of the cities towns crossroads settlements railroads waterways railroad stops river crossings etc. are identified. No troop positions are given. The map is signed by Deprezin in the lower right corner as given above; we have been unable to locate any other maps prepared by Deprezin. An excellent manuscript map of east-central North Carolina near the close of the Civil War. Some browning one small old stain several ink smudges but very good. Pen-and-ink and watercolor on glazed cotton folded. Deprezin apparently served in the 119th New York Infantry throughout the Civil War mustering out with the unit in New York in June 1865 at the time one of seven captains in the regiment. With the 119th Deprezin served first in Virginia defending Washington and in the Chancellorsville and Gettysburg campaigns; detached to the Army of the Cumberland the unit served in the Chattanooga and Knoxville campaigns in late 1863 the Atlanta campaign and the March to the Sea in 1864 and the campaign in the Carolinas through May 1865 participating in the battle at Bentonville and the occupations of Goldsboro and Raleigh. The unit was on hand for Johnston's surrender to Sherman at the Bennett Farm near present day Durham which is located on the map. Deprezin was mustered into the unit as a 23-year old sergeant in 1862 wounded at Chancellorsville and then promoted to lieutenant; he was promoted to captain in July 1864. 9844. <br/><br/> unknown books

Superbly bound by the Monastery Hill Bindery unsigned but documented per below and through descent provenance in full maroon crushed morocco with rectilinear design motif shields stylized bird etc on both covers wide inner dentelles with elaborate gilt ruling. The book has been personally assembled by Ernst Hertzberg the original founder and principal first binder of the firm in 1902 of the Monastery Hill Binder. From "Exhibit of Bookbinding" St. Louis Ringer & Hertzberg 1904 this important documentation explaining the incredible origination of this extra-illustrated volume: "This work was especially gotten up by Ernst Hertzberg for the Universal Exposition of 1904 to show the art of Bookbinding in this line in America. Provenance: Through descent through Hertzberg family and Monastery Hill Bindery. Extra-Illustrated with "many Copper and Steel Plates Etchings and Photogravures extended into two volumes" printed on title-page which has been adapted by Hertzberg to contain additional information. As well printed in red at bottom of title page: "This was especially gotten up for the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition St. Louis 1904 to show the Art of Bookbinding in America by Ernst Hertsberg 110 Randolf St. Chicago. 1857265300Guernsey 1857. unbound. 4 pages front and back with each two-page spread measuring 8.25 x 10.5 inches Guernsey British Channel Islands Hauteville House March 22 1857 in French but roughly translated to Martin Besnard sending warm thanks to Besnard for coming to the defense of the Hugo name -- a story he heard through their mutual friend Dulac who managed to escape from the Bonapartiste police. Hugo enthusiastically expresses his appreciation and describes himself as "only of the newest laborers in the struggle.of which his correspondent is a glorious veteran." In closing he would like to believe that France has made some lead ways as far as intellectual progress and human liberty are concerned.and hopes that they will meet "and it will be a joy to personally shake your intrepid and noble hand." This letter grades very good to fine condition. The iron gall ink has caused six letters in various words to appear as if they were cut out of the letter. This is a normal phenomenon and does not detract from the letter.<br/><br/> French author best known for "Les Miserables" who spent over 19 years of his life in political exile.<br/><br/> unknown books

Limited Edition All fourteen volumes of this complete set are in very good or better condition in 3/4 red leather and marbled paper covered boards with five raised bands on the spine and with gilt text in three of the compartments and with gilt rules separating the leather from the marbled paper. The top edges of the text blocks are gilt. Each volumes is quarto of 11 5/8 by 8 1/2 inches. The spines are all uniformly darkened some chipping and wear to the leather at the heels of the spines and the leather is worn through on several volumes over the tips of the boards. The hinges and joints for all the volumes are tight and strong. The contents are in near perfect condition with few marks of foxing or tanning. The images are nearly all protected with tissue guards. One of only 1000 sets printed with this set identified as number 414 and subscribed for by Mrs. Mary E. Drummond as noted on the verso of the fly title page of volume III. The set includes the following novels: Han of Iceland; Bug-Jargal; Last Day of A Condemned; Claude Gueux; Notre- Dame Of Paris in two volumes; Les Miserables in five volumes; Laughing Man in two volumes; and Ninety-Three. Illustrated throughout with black and white engravings by various artists. This is an extremely large and heavy set weighing 48 pounds. The plates were designed by the author who was at the time an assistant at the ophthalmological clinic of Carl Friedrich Richard Forster 1825-1902 at Breslau to whom the atlas is dedicated.
