In 1833 while she was rehearsing the role of Princess Negroni in <i>Lucrèce Borgia</i> Victor Hugo noticed her. She abandoned her theatrical career to devote herself for the rest of her days to her lover. "</em></p><p>A letter to Paul Meurice sent the day before gives us a detailed account of the journey that Victor Hugo was about to undertake: "We will leave on Monday the 28th with M. Lacroix the publisher of Les Misérables we will spend Tuesday in London. On Wednesday 29th we will be in Brussels via Ostend Thursday 30th in Liège since you like Liège. So try to get there you and Charles on July 31st" and then added at the end of the letter apparently anticipating his doctor's recommendations:<br />"To moderate the rain of letters during my absence will you have something published in Le Siècle or La Presse like this: 'On the advice of the doctors who advised him to change his air after the great work of <em>Les Misérables</em> M. Victor Hugo has left Guernsey for a journey of a few weeks'</p><p>Émile Allix 1836-1911 was a French medical doctor specializing in pediatrics. It was during a holiday in Jersey that the young medical student then 19 years old met the writer through his brother Jules and his sister Augustine who were close to the Hugo circle. His republican convictions his opposition to the regime of Napoleon III his kindness and his very gentle nature were all arguments that allowed the doctor to seal the beginning of an unfailing friendship with the writer. In 1868 Allix assisted Adèle Hugo who was very ill in her last moments. A close friend of Victor Hugo and his family he was a constant believer like any other son. With his colleagues Alfred Vulpian and Germain Sée he signed the last certificates that preceded the declaration of Victor Hugo's death on 22 May 1885.</p><p>When Victor Hugo signed with only the initial of his first name it meant above all a very close relationship with his correspondent usually reserved for his closest circle. The regret expressed here by the writer at not being able to meet his doctor friend for his Belgian journey testifies all the more to the ties that united them.</p><p><u>Provenance:</u><br />Private collection</p>

Transverse folds inherent to mailing fold joining the two leaves reinforced with a fine strip of pasted paper barely perceptible. Absent from the very complete online edition of Juliette Drouet's letters to Hugo by the Centre d'Études et de Recherche Éditer/Interpréter University of Rouen-Normandy. Very beautiful declaration of love and admiration by Juliette Drouet the day after Hugo's plea defending his son. Charles Hugo had been brought before the assizes and condemned despite his father's intervention for having valiantly castigated the execution of Claude Montcharmont. Hugo's great love addresses this letter in troubled times where father and son find themselves at the forefront of the scene for their abolitionist positions. Scandalized by the execution of Montcharmont a 29-year-old poacher from Morvan Charles Hugo publishes an article in l'Événement which earns him a trial for contempt of respect due to the laws: the Second Republic already exists only in name and the press is subject to frequent attacks further aggravated here by the notoriety of the Hugos. Victor wants to defend his son and delivers a plea that remains famous: ""Mon fils tu reçois aujourd'hui un grand honneur tu as été jugé digne de combattre de souffrir peut-être pour la sainte cause de la vérité. A dater d'aujourd'hui tu entres dans la véritable vie virile de notre temps c'est-à-dire dans la lutte pour le juste et pour le vrai. Sois fier toi qui n'est qu'un simple soldat de l'idée humaine et démocratique tu es assis sur ce banc où s'est assis Béranger où s'est assis Lamennais !"" My son you receive today a great honor you have been judged worthy to fight perhaps to suffer for the holy cause of truth. From today you enter into the true virile life of our time that is to say into the struggle for the just and the true. Four pamphlets bound into early brown calf with an elaborate floral device embossed in blind at the center of both the front and rear covers within an elaborate outer gilt ruled frame with formal decorations. All edges are marbled. The rubbed & worn covers are detached and the spine has perished and thus lacking. The pagination is as follows: i-xii 1-96 pp.; 5 6-45 1 pp.; 5 folding plates; 5 6-66 pp.; 4 pp. 1-82. There is foxing throughout.<p>The ownership name of James Stewart and the faded date of "1881" is penned on the front blank. In what appears to be his hand the statement "From Pierre Soule" is penned along the top of the verso of the front endpaper. Additionally the attractive sienna-toned ex-libris bookplate of "R.G.S." is mounted on the front pastedown. <p>Stated to be from the library of Pierre Soule with his name signature at the head of the first pamphlet. Soule 1801-1870 was the French-born New Orleans attorney and Louisiana Senator.<p>The lawyer involved in these 4 cases Gustave Louis Chaix d'Est-Ange 1800 - 1876 was the son of the attorney general at the court of criminal justice of Reims. As a lawyer his oratorical talent was noted at the Paris bar where he practiced. He was entrusted with a number of important cases and from 1842-1844 was president of the Paris Bar Association.<p>1 Plaidoyer et réplique de Me Chaix-d'Est-Ange dans le procès d'Émile de La Roncière précédés d'une Note de M. le lieutenant-général Clément de la Roncière d'Esquisse préliminaire de M. Eugène Roch et d'une lettre de M. Émile de La Roncière adressée à "l'Observateur des tribunaux". Paris: De L'Imprimerie De Dezauche 1835. The sensational trial of Emile de La Ronciere 1803 - 1874 was most recently memorialized by John Fowles in his novel "The French Lieutenant's Woman". In chapter 28 of the novel he discusses the trial of the young cavalry officer who was accused of raping Marie the sixteen-year-old daughter of his commanding General Baron de Morell. The trial itself revolved around a series of anonymous letters threatening the Morell family and signed "E. de La R.". La Ronciere was found guilty and sentenced to ten years in prison. The verdict was controversial and has been debated for many years. In the pamphlet at hand is included the text of a letter to the l'Observateur des Tribunaux written by La Ronciere's father Clement de La Ronciere on August 25 1835 and one written by the imprisoned La Ronciere himself on September 10 1835. These are followed by a preliminary outline by Eugene Roch. The text from the trial is based on reporting in l'Observateur des Tribunaux journal des documens judiciaires. It begins with the plea of La Ronciere's attorney Chaix d'Est-Ange. Although misbound later in this collection of pamphlets facsimiles of items used as evidence in the trial are included. These include 4 folding facsimiles on which are printed 8 samples of handwriting of La Ronciere and of Marie de Morell. Also included on a fifth folding plate is a remarkable plan of the home of the Morells with a view of the floor where Marie's room was located.<p>2 Plaidoyer de Me Chaix-d'Est-Ange pour M. le ministre du Commerce et des Travaux publics intervenant contre M. Victor Hugo. Paris: Imprimerie De Pihan Delaforest 1832. Victor Hugo's play "Le Roi s'amuse" was the basis for the libretto of Verdi's opera Rigoletto. The opening of the play on November 22 1832 was highly anticipated. The opening night box office receipts were an enormous success but the play was not. Both the audience and the critic's responses were negative. However the most devastating response came from the Minister of the Interior. He saw the play as an attack on the royal family and ordered it suspended i.e. banned. In the Charter of 1830 censorship was stipulated to "never be re-established". This conflict led to a trial on December 19 1832. Odilon Barrot represented Hugo and Chaix d'Est-Ange represented the Ministry of Commerce. He took the unpopular stand that the State had the authority to examine dramatic works before production. His plea is published here. Hugo lost this free-speech debate and the play was banned for 50 years.<p>3 Plaidoyer de M. Chaix d'Est-Ange pour le sieur Auguste Labauve et les sieur et dame Formage plaignans et parties civiles contre Frédéric Benoît accusé. Paris: Imprimerie De Pihan Delaforest Morinval 1832. A VIVID ACCOUNT OF MATRICIDE! Frederic Benoit 1810 - 1832 known as "Le Parricide" was executed by the guillotine at the Place St. Jaques in the 14th arrondisement of Paris on August 30 1832. The story of Benoit's killing of his mother in November 1829 and that of his male lover seventeen-year-old Joseph Formage on July 22 1831 is well documented and need not be repeated here. In this civil plea of June 14 1832 on behalf of the butcher Auguste Labauve and also on behalf of Joseph Formage's parents Chaix d'Est-Ange outdoes himself in painting with vibrant colors the slaughter by Benoit of his own mother. Labauve was the second victim of this crime. In January of 1830 an anonymous letter was found threatening Benoit's father a justice of the peace as well as Labauve with the same fate as that of Madame Benoit. The letter was said to be in the hand of Labauve. He was brought to trial for murder and was acquitted by a divided jury. However he was sentenced to a 5 year prison term for having written the threatening letter.<p>4 Procès fait à la lettre adressée au duc d'Orléans par Cauchois-Lemaire. Paris: Delangle Freres Libraires 1828. In December 1827 the editor of the Constitutionnel Louis Francois Auguste Cauchois-Lemaire 1789 - 1861 published a notorious 69 page pamphlet "Sur la crise actuelle lettre a S.A.R. le duc d'Orleans". The pamphlet addressed to Louis-Philippe the Duke of Orleans was a powerful attack on the ultra-royalist government of Joseph de Villele and a denunciation of the so-called "massacre" that took place on the rue Saint-Denis on July 27 1827. Cauchois-Lemaire concludes his essay paraphrasing the French "Thus liberty awaits the day which should let it emerge from its prison. And we who are tired of the long wait together we call for a favorable star to hasten it." The result was that Cauchois-Lemaire was accused of trying to persuade the duc d'Orleans the "favorable star" to lead the opposition to the government and have it overthrown. He and the two publishers Ponthieu and Schubart were brought to trial on January 12 1828. Cauchois-Lemaire was sentenced to 15 months in La Force prison in addition to a fine. In defense of Cauchois-Lemaire Chaix d'Est-Ange given that the facts of the matter were difficult to vindicate delivered a brilliant thesis on constitutional law. The press at the time praised his eloquence. Cauchois-Lemaire himself was so impressed that he wrote Delangle Freres from prison on January 28 1828 requesting that they publish a transcript of the trial. Three states can be distinguished: the first ours is distinguished by the title page entitled Oeuvres posthumes as is the half-title. The second state substitutes a new title page entitled Album d'un pessimiste with the half-title still indicating Oeuvres posthumes this is the state known and described by Clouzot. The third state has a new title page dated 1836 again entitled Album d'un pessimiste with the half-title oeuvres posthumes this is the most common state; however the mention of a notice by L'Héritier has disappeared to make way for the mention of a biographical notice extracted from Michaud's Biographie universelle. L'Heritier's notice was removed from the first state as the publisher preferred not to include it for fear of offending certain contemporaries mentioned. Rabbe's works are preceded by Victor Hugo's poem: A Alphonse Rabbe which would later appear in Les chants du Crépuscule published in 1836. These posthumous works were collected and published by the writer's nephew Charles Rabbe who received a subsidy from the Ministry of Public Instruction for this purpose. A dark and sombre writer marked by failure and the futility of things who died in 1829 from opium excess it is unknown whether his death was suicide or an unfortunate dosage of opium Rabbe would enchant Baudelaire receive the touching solicitude of Victor Hugo and André Breton would not forget him in his anthology. All of Rabbe's pages are filled with a sickly and feverish romanticism haunted by pessimism and despair of which his principal work that would make his reputation: Philosophie du désespoir is emblematic of his profound melancholy and his cult of death. Essays commentary and maxims prose poems punctuate these posthumous works a model of dark romanticism. Of greatest interest is the exceptional rarity of this very first state of Alphonse Rabbe's major work unknown to Clouzot and to most bibliographers. Splendid and likely unpublished letter from Victor Hugo inviting his correspondent to the famed Romantic 'Cénacle' gatherings at the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal a veritable literary institution in the 1830's. ""This Saturday the 6th I noticed the other evening Sir that you expressed with some regret not having a ball to attend on Sunday tomorrow. Now I have managed to arrange my guard duty so as to be free tomorrow from nine o'clock to midnight alas I could not obtain more than six hours and I am taking advantage of it to take my wife to a small masquerade party at Nodier's. If you would like to come with us we would be delighted and Nodier too. To do so you would need to be at my home at nine o'clock the hour I myself will return. Answer me this morning and believe in all my friendship. Vr Hugo."" ""In the drawing room of the Arsenal library where he had been head librarian since 1824 Charles Nodier hosted every Sunday evening the entire Romantic literary and artistic elite during the final years of the Restoration and the early years of the July Monarchy. In addition to Hugo one of the most regular attendees and later Musset Dumas and Balzac the salon gathered ""representatives of all the book professions from conception to illustration publication and criticism . in a friendly and convivial atmosphere"" Marta Sukiennicka. Hugo invites his correspondent to a masked ball held on one of those celebrated Sundays. Far from being a mere social occasion the 'Cénacle of the Arsenal' salon was one of the most vibrant centers of the Romantic movement. Having succeeded in excusing himself from his National Guard duties he was a sub-lieutenant in 1830 Hugo had likely arranged for a replacement to take his watch that evening; even the most illustrious of writers were not exempt from such military service. A few years later Balzac dodged his National Guard shifts and was imprisoned twice in 1836 and 1839. unknown

Superbly bound by the Monastery Hill Bindery unsigned but documented per below and through descent provenance in full maroon crushed morocco with rectilinear design motif shields stylized bird etc on both covers wide inner dentelles with elaborate gilt ruling. The book has been personally assembled by Ernst Hertzberg the original founder and principal first binder of the firm in 1902 of the Monastery Hill Binder. From “Exhibit of Bookbinding†St. Louis Ringer & Hertzberg 1904 this important documentation explaining the incredible origination of this extra-illustrated volume: “This work was especially gotten up by Ernst Hertzberg for the Universal Exposition of 1904 to show the art of Bookbinding in this line in America. Provenance: Through descent through Hertzberg family and Monastery Hill Bindery. Extra-illustrated with “many Copper and Steel Plates Etchings and Photogravures extended into two volumes†printed on title-page which has been adapted by Hertzberg to contain additional information. Ernest Appert Paris 1877 25 x 33 cm une feuille Portrait of Victor Hugo on albumen paper in three-quarter view his right hand slipped under his waistcoat wearing a wool coat and jacket. A photograph mounted on rigid cardboard. Caption at bottom margin with photographer's name and address: E.Appert expert - Photographe du Président de la République - 24 Rue Taitbout Paris. Blank verso. Minute lacks to top margin. The photograph 19x25cm. A small tear to bottom margin at the address location. Since Appert was the official photographer of deputies and senators it is possible that Victor Hugo was photographed by him in this capacity since he was elected senator of the Seine in 1876. The photograph was probably part of an iconographic album grouping the photos of deputies and senators. Appert seems to have paid great attention to the pose of the writer-senator which differs greatly from most of his official photographs whose poses are more common and far from being as sophisticated. A copy at Victor Hugo's house in Guernsey Hauteville-house also possessing a copy in cabinet card format. NB: This work is available at the bookshop on request within 48 hours. Ernest Appert unknown
1857265300Guernsey 1857. unbound. 4 pages front and back with each two-page spread measuring 8.25 x 10.5 inches Guernsey British Channel Islands Hauteville House March 22 1857 in French but roughly translated to Martin Besnard sending warm thanks to Besnard for coming to the defense of the Hugo name -- a story he heard through their mutual friend Dulac who managed to escape from the Bonapartiste police. Hugo enthusiastically expresses his appreciation and describes himself as "only of the newest laborers in the struggle.of which his correspondent is a glorious veteran." In closing he would like to believe that France has made some lead ways as far as intellectual progress and human liberty are concerned.and hopes that they will meet "and it will be a joy to personally shake your intrepid and noble hand." This letter grades very good to fine condition. The iron gall ink has caused six letters in various words to appear as if they were cut out of the letter. This is a normal phenomenon and does not detract from the letter.<br/> <br/> French author best known for "Les Miserables" who spent over 19 years of his life in political exile.<br/> <br/> unknown

Hetzel the publisher of this set published the first French edition in 1862. Despite its popularity early editions of this vintage are uncommon. TWH was the first department store in San Francisco; it opened in 1854 and closed in 1965 located at Post and Grant. In the 19th century most bookshop sales in the US took place in departments of major department stores like TWH. Wholly plausible the book collection was acquired in the mid 19th century by a previous owner on a pleasure trip downtown SF which meant dressing up--hats gloves and stockings required. TWH was a place to be seen like its competitor The City of Paris and was known for its French atmosphere. The purveyor defined good taste and satisfied desires for anything French. Certainly paints a colorful picture of the TWH shopping experience when this fine book set was acquired at TWH's book department located on the main selling floor of the grand store.
