P003947Tallinn: Teatrikirjastus Tavet Mutsu 1924. Octavo 19 Ã 11.5 cm. Original pictorial paper-covered boards with a design by Peet Aren and executed by the studio of Ed. Taska; 103 pp. Boards lightly scuffed; small stain to lower front board; upper spine torn; internally very good. First Estonian edition of Hofmannsthal's 1903 psychological drama based on Sophocles translated by Marie Under the Estonian poet and organizer of the modernist "Siuru" group. The cover features a strong design by Peet Aren 1889-1970 a prominent member of the Tartu school of visual arts in the 1920s whose prolific work as a graphic designer and painter was influenced by German Expressionism and Constructivism. The present design combines elements of both alluding both to the play's Greek setting and to modernity through a dynamic arrangement of intersecting flashes of lightning or electricity. Aren may have been responsible for the set design as well which is executed in a similar style. Boards printed in black green and gold by the studio of Eduard Taska the famous Estonian bookbinder and leatherworker. Not in KVK OCLC. hardcover books
