The work tells the story of love and freedom that blossomed between the noblewoman Vanina Vanini and the Carbonaro Pietro Missirilli in a Romagna plunged into obscurantism after the transition from the mild government of Pius VII to the harshly repressive rule of Leo XII.
The splendid lithographs illustrating the text are the work of Modena painter Carlo Mattioli who was mainly active in the field of graphic design in the 1960s. The first series of twenty illustrations created for the Guanda edition of Vanina Vanini dates back to 1961. The present edition interpreted by ten lithographs—all numbered and signed in pencil by the author— was printed in the presses of Giorgio Upiglio.
Cerastico
