Rouff (1846 - 1927), un des grands pionniers de l’édition populaire. Il avait crée les éditions Rouff après avoir racheté le fonds de l’ancienne maison Barba en 1873. Les deux volumes sont copieusement illustrés de dessins (souvent à pleine page) d’Osvaldo TOFANI, un illustrateur natif de Florence en 1849, mort à Paris en 1915. Tofani a collaboré à de nombreux journaux illustrés et éditeurs : Le Monde Illustré, Le Tour du Monde, Le Rire, entre autres. Jules Rouff a souvent fait appel à celui qu’un critique avait qualifié de “maître du crayon”. L’illustration des Mystères de Paris est une des plus impressionnantes réalisées par cet artiste.

In a half diced calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally sound. Rubbing to the boards and spines. Backstrips of Volumes I and V are lifting heavier to Volume I.
