"In 1783 Princess Ekaterina Dashkova was appointed director of Russia's Imperial Academy of Arts and Sciences by Catherine the Great. It was just two years after she had met with another fascinating personality of the Enlightenment - Benjamin Franklin founding president of American Philisophical Society. This volume published as a companion to an exhibition of the same title and on the occasion of Franklin Tercentenary of 2005 highlights Dashkova as an accomplished Enlightenment woman. It explores how she like Franklin took up the challenge of the living according to the newest ideals of her age. Nominated by Franklin in 1789 to become the first female member of the American Philosophical Society she in turn made him the first American member of the Russian Academy." - blurb from back of book. 14265np: nd; ca. 1950-1985. First volume: 6” x 9” spiral- bound sketchbook with numerous scrapbook elements. Front cover detached but present. Else very good. Second volume: 11” x 11 1/2” green photo-album/scrapbook. Generally fine.

Collection of sketches drawings and cartoons by Lois Pullen of her dog Bozo created for her longtime best friend Sue Cappola. Over the years Lois illustrated every letter she sent to Sue with a cartoon of Bozo. Sue loved the antics of the scrappy dog so much that she clipped each of the drawings from the letters pasting them first into a sketchbook – already illustrated with Bozo cartoons – Lois had given her as a gift and later into a larger photo-album/scrapbook. Most of Pullen's Bozo vignettes are essentially single-panel cartoons endearing and warm if not laugh-out-loud funny but the artist has a fine eye for character and detail as well as fine a gift for quickly capturing a moment with a line or two of accompanying text. A few multi-panel pieces and an accordion-style fold-out book are also among the illustrations. A treasury of a friendship which spanned over four decades a wonderful example of folk cartooning and a reminder of the quickly and sadly fading art of letter writing. unknown books
