With the important Gavarni illustrations. Delightfully illustrated with 23 plates to Volume I; 20 plates to Volume II; 22 plates and a folding map to Volume III; and 17 plates to Volume IV with numerous in-text illustrations vignettes and head and tail pieces throughout the volumes. Collated complete. Le Juif Errant or The Wandering Jew was a serially published novel which was hugely popular in Paris and elsewhere. It was written by Eugène Sue 1804-1857 who made popularised the genre of the serial novel in France. This 1845 is complete in four volumes with illustrations by Paul Gavarni 1804-1866 a French caricaturist. This was one of the most ambitious of his book illustration projects. In half calf and silk bindings. Externally fairly smart with some shelf wear to the boards and rubbing to the spine and extremities. Fading to the rear board of vol I and a little to the front board of vol IV. Pages 11 to 15 of vol IV are coming loose but otherwise pages are firmly bound. Pages are bright but spotted throughout. Half-brown shagreen bindings spines slightly faded with four raised bands set with gilt dots and decorated with double gilt compartments marbled paper boards marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Some foxing as usual. Le juif errant is one of the greatest bestsellers of the 19th century published just after Les mystères de Paris. To the narrative qualities of Les mystères de Paris Le juif errant adds the intervention of the supernatural and the fantastic represented by the legendary vagabond who gives his name to the book. Preceded by cholera which inspired Eugène Sue to write anthology pages the legendary Jew returns from beyond the seas and beyond the centuries to prevent the Society of Jesus from seizing a fabulous fortune by eliminating its heirs one by one. Le juif errant being an adventure novel taking place in the four corners of the world. It triggered an anti-Jesuit movement in France. If Eugène Sue is more or less forgotten today he was not only one of the most famous novelists of the 19th century but the most read in Europe and even Dostoevsky was a regular reader of his work. Few writers of this era benefited from the editorial qualities demonstrated by Les mystères de Paris and Le juif errant abundantly and superbly illustrated. Eugène Sue 1804-1857 was a French novelist and one of several authors who popularised the genre of the serial novel with his The Mysteries of Paris. This novel concerns Parisian high society and infidelity and also contains the first known expression of the popular proverb "La vengeance se mange très-bien froide" later expressed in English as "Revenge is a dish best served cold".Translated into English by C. Rochford this work is illustrated with an engraved title page and twenty-one plates by G. Standfast. In a half calf binding. Externally sound with shelf wear and rubbing to the boards and spine and a little bumping to the extremities. Hinges are strained but held firmly by cords. Internally firmly bound. 184110854London: J. Clements. London J. Clements nd c1841. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy. A penny dreadful presumably. Six numbers bound as one with a title page and an author's preface dated 1831. Each part is numbered and pagination continues between the parts though there are no prices on each part. The story takes starts with a slave ship being boarded by a pirate Brulart who seems to be white not black. Subseqent to this a couple of years later I think one of the slaves Attar Gull takes revenge on his captors but suffers and dies cursing the white man. I suspect the inclusion of Brulart in the title of this 49 page piece is to bringing in the readers as the main bulk of the story is around Gull. Scarce with no copies at auction since 1932. Recently rebound in 1/4 calf with marbled boards. The binding is new so the description relates only to the text block. The leaves are mostly in excellent shape with the inevitable ageing and tanning a few leaves have a stain that doesn't affect the text's readability. Three-quarter grained brown leather with brown cloth sides demarcated with gilt rules. Raised bands gilt lettering in two compartments and tooled ornaments in remaining four compartments. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Lacks a half-title page and list of illustrations. The engraved title page faces the typographic title page in the first volume; no title page precedes the second volume. Fourteen engraved plates including title page. 8vo. pp. 442 376. A very scarce copy of the Osborne translation of Sue's Mathilde; this edition also being notable for its inclusion of Robert Cruikshank's engravings dated 1845. Isaac Robert Cruikshank 1789-1856 was a caricaturist and illustrator who along with his brother George who illustrated for Dickens pioneered the use of speech balloons. It appears that Cruikshank produced twenty-four plates for Matilda however only thirteen appear in this copy. The title page indicates that T. C. Newby was located at Wigmore-Street Cavendish-Square though the illustrated plates and the last page of the second volume indicate that they were each printed at 72 Mortimer Street. The publisher and printer Thomas Cautley Newby was located at 72 Mortimer Street between 1844 and 1849. T. C. Newby hardcover
