Externally sound with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Discolouration to the boards. Joints starting but firm with splits in the cloth across the spine. The odd mark to the boards. Hinges tender but firm. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the odd mark from the ink of the opposite illustration. Contemporary inscriptions to the front pastedown. A scarce edition of the English translation of this work in a half calf binding with blind stamping to the boards and spine. Eugène Sue 1804-1857 was a French novelist and one of several authors who popularised the genre of the serial novel with his The Mysteries of Paris. This novel concerns Parisian high society and infidelity and also contains the first known expression of the popular proverb "La vengeance se mange très-bien froide" later expressed in English as "Revenge is a dish best served cold".Translated into English by C. Rochford this work is illustrated with an engraved title page and twenty-one plates by G. Standfast. In a half calf binding. Externally sound with shelf wear and rubbing to the boards and spine and a little bumping to the extremities. Hinges are strained but held firmly by cords. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age toned with the odd spot throughout more so to the plates. Ink stain to the fore edge affecting the first several pages but not the text. Good C. Daly hardcover
