This edition by Benson brings together all but eight of the sonnets: A Lover s Complaint The Passionate Pilgrim mostly not by Shakespeare The Phoenix and the Turtle attributed to Shakespeare and elegies and other poems honoring Shakespeare by Jonson Milton Digges Herrick Strode Carew and others. Benson famously reorganized the sonnets probably out of concern that an old-fashioned sonnet sequence would not appeal to the generation of the Cavalier Poets. Many are run together to form poems of twenty-eight lines or more and all are given titles. Spine with decorative gilt bands. A new red leather title label lettered in gilt has been added to replace the missing original. Marbled paper on the boards. Some rubbing to the edges and the top hinge cracked but holding firm. Illustrated with six stunning full colour chromolithographic plates and twenty-seven sepia vignettes throughout the text. The artist is Julius Höppner a master of fairy and fantasy illustration. Original white cloth with elaborate full gilt decoration to spine and front board which also has a sunken panel with a bevelled gilt tooled edge where a full colour illustration is placed. Silk patterned paper endpapers. All edges gilt. Binding a bit loose. The board edges are rubbed and marked & there is some minor foxing to most pages but overall this is a near to very good copy of a truly beautiful book.</p> Ernest Nister. London. A large and very well preserved copy of this very rare and unusual survival original sewing holes and any other tiny imperfections expertly perfected according to the exacting standards established by the American Institute of Conservation. A RARE OFFERING FROM THE SECOND FOLIO. Made at Thomas Cotes' print shop located at the Signe of the Blacke Beare in Pads Church-yard. this is an example that few have ever seen but for the original 17th century purchasers and binders of Cotes' loose sheets and in later centuries folio conservators or binders working on the rare individual sheet that only remained in sheet form until being rebound back into its folio for use as numbered pages. It also originates from one of the first two folio editions of 1623 and 1632 of which only 1500 or so total combined copies were printed. With the hindsight of 400 years sheets were something that no one thought to preserve in 1632 These folio sheets were printed specifically for binding into complete copies of the Second Folio. 19446199<p><strong>First edition of '<em>Antony and Cleopatra</em>' translated by Pasternak</strong>. This is the only separate edition of his translation. Printed during wartime approved for printing on June 3 1944.</p><p>This is the third Shakespeare play translated by <strong>Boris Pasternak</strong> 1890-1960 commissioned by the Moscow Art Theatre. He began work on it immediately after completing the translation of '<em>Romeo and Juliet</em>'. By the end of June 1943 the translation was ready for printing. Soviet literary critic Mikhail Morozov described this translation as '<em>the most successful</em>' emphasizing that it transcended mere translation to become a poetic dialogue between two poets. Pasternak himself likened Cleopatra to '<em>the Nastasya Filippovna of antiquity</em>' drawing parallels with heroines such as Anna Karenina and Madame Bovary. <br />Illustrations were created by <strong>Mikhail Pikov</strong> 1903-1973 a student of VKhUTEMAS under Vladimir Favorsky known for his mastery of woodcut techniques.</p><p>Zakharenko 1995. # 114.</p> OGIZ, Goslitizdat paperback

1887901973London: Macmillan & cO 1887 A very solid 3 volume set The Victoria Edition produced by Macmillan & Co. Full leather bound. The boards are the orignal boards as are the endpapers however the spines have been rebound in matching leather and the original paper spines pasted on. Vol 1 shows a little more wear thanthe other two volumes its front free endpaper present but loose. Each volume has a previos owners book plate on the front pastedown. The orignal gilt is very bright and the gilt decor around the inner boards still vright. Minor shelfwear bumping to corners. It would be appear that they were repaired ealry 1900's but the the repair is excellent and all volumes are very solid and clean. Macmillan & cO hardcover
