English journalist short-story writer poet and novelist Rudyard Kipling was one of the most popular writers in the British Empire in both prose and verse in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1907. Kipling was presented by Lord Balfour with the gold medal of the Royal Society of Literature at the centenary banquet of the society of the New Prince's Galleries Piccadilly on Wednesday July 7 1926. Some general slight tanning and shelfwear occasional inner hinges cracking or cracked occasional tan offsetting from endsheets to facing leaves several of the spare labels absent evidently utilized. Nonetheless a good reasonably sound set ideal for binding purposes. From an edition initially limited to 1050 copies of each through volume twenty and thereafter to five hundred copies of each volume printed on handmade paper and signed by Kipling in the first volume. There was a hiatus after the publication of the 26th volume in 1927 and the remaining five volumes finally appeared in 1938 resulting in a number of extant sets terminating with the final volume present here or with the 20th. First U.S. edition with the Townsend illustrations. According to some critics "The Brushwood Boy" is the best of all Kipling's short stories. This notable dream story was first published in December 1895 in the Century Magazine. It was first collected with Kipling's revisions in The Day's Work 1898. The story was first published separately in 1899 by Doubleday and McClure Company with 17 full-page illustrations by Orson Lowell and again in 1907 with the Townsend illustrations unlike the 1899 edition the 1907 edition was published in Britain as well by Macmillan.
