The novel is notable for its detailed portrait of the people culture and varied religions of India: "The book presents a vivid picture of India its teeming populations religions and superstitions and the life of the bazaars and the road." The story unfolds against the backdrop of the Great Game the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. The novel popularized the phrase and idea of the Great Game. The story is set after the Second Anglo-Afghan War which ended in 1881 and before the Third 1919 probably in the period of 1893 to 1898. Kimball O'Hara was a child like many others living on the streets of India in the early 1900s. That was until he befriended a Buddhist lama and became his disciple. The story of Kim follows our cheeky fun-loving hero as he journeys across northern India - from Lahore to the vast beauty of the Himalayan mountains - in the company of the lama. The two of them have different goals but the physical paths they follow are very similar. Before leaving Lahore Kim is entrusted by one of his father's friends to deliver a very special message. Through this he meets a member of the British Secret Service and discovers secrets he couldn't have imagined. As the story progresses and his journey continues Kim begins to learn more and more about what is known as the Great Game. As we follow Kim we see him transformed from a simple vagabond into a sharpened operative in the dangerous world of politics betrayal and death. All the excitement of Kim's adventures takes place in the backdrop of a beautiful country full of amazing sights incredible sounds and an extremely rich culture. In what is considered by many to be Kipling's finest work he draws on his own experiences of living in India to tell an unforgettable and action-packed story within a vivid and accurate setting. 2023BIBHB0101022702023. Hardcover. New. About The Book: This book showcases the ""Letters of Marque"" along with illustrations including scenes from Rudyard Kipling. It emphasizes the value of experiencing the vast Indian Empire and its diverse people urging a break from daily routines to embark on spontaneous journeys. Such adventures may initially be bewildering but ultimately lead to a Globe-Trotter's mindset swiftly exploring kingdoms and penning books. Jaipur seen as a brief stop en route to Bombay lacks adequate sun protection with garnet knowledge being a rarity. An Englishman's quest to study seasonal visitors in Jaipur disrupts his familiar life casting him into the role of a Globe-Trotter marked by both personal sacrifice and the enchantment of discovering the Taj Mahal. About The Author: Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 entered this world in Bombay in December 1865. His journey took him back to India from England just before his seventeenth birthday where he embarked on a career in journalism. He started at the Civil and Military Gazette in Lahore and later joined the Pioneer in Allahabad. During this time he penned a remarkable collection of poems and stories that formed the cornerstone of his literary legacy. Upon his return to London in 1889 Kipling swiftly ascended to worldwide acclaim becoming a household name. Throughout his lifetime his works enjoyed immense popularity and critical acclaim. However as he became more vocal about his political beliefs he also grew increasingly controversial. This controversial stance made it challenging for readers and critics to assess his literary contributions without the influence of political biases and opinions.
