A bright and attractive copy. Originally published serially in McClure's Magazine beginning in November 1896 Captains Courageous is a story about Harvey Cheyne the marooned son a wealthy railroad magnate who is rescued by fishermen off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. After being tossed overboard an ocean liner Harvey meets Disko Troop captain of the small fishing boat We're Here who refuses to take the young man back to port but agrees to take him on as part of the crew. Over the course of the novel Harvey befriends the captain's son Dan who helps the arrogant millionaire develop into a hard-working honest young man who is self-reliant and content with living simply. This first edition of Captains Courageous in book form contains twenty-two plates of black and white illustrations by Taber including a frontispiece. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. A most noteworthy copy bearing the copper-engraved bookplate of Henry Van Deventer Black which was designed by Mr. Black and engraved by Edwin Davis French. The book is signed by Henry Van Deventer Black and he has dated it Dec. 1892. He has also written that "This book has spent a winter on the Nile and been around the world" on the ffep. Stapled as issued in self wrappers; green cloth chemise and slipcase. First edition of Kipling's only story of the slums. Based on the author's observations of the lower classes it is set in the East End telling the story of a young honest woman who has become a relief worker in the slums after she has been deserted by her abusive husband. She voluntarily administers a charity fund donated by the Church and keeps a detailed record of the money spent for the poor. When her husband Tom Herodsfoot returns to her and wants to appropriate the charity money she refuses to hand it over and in revenge he beats her to death. Included in "Barrack-Room Ballads" are such well-known verses as "Danny Deever" "Tommy" "Fuzzy-Wuzzy" "Gunga Din" and "Mandalay"; these had appeared in the 1890 pirated volume DEPARTMENTAL DITTIES. published by New York Book Co. Leading off "Ballads" and the whole book is "The Ballad of East and West" ". and never the twain shall meet"; this is its first appearance in a Kipling book as it had appeared only in the 1891 poetry anthology LYRA HEROICA. Exceptionally rare. Written in vernacular dialect Kipling's The Barrack Room Ballads contains some of Kipling's most well-known work including the poems "Gunga Din" "Tommy" "Mandalay" and "Danny Deever" which established his early fame as a poet. The first poems were published in the Scots Observer in the first half of 1890 and collected in Barrack-Room Ballads and Other Verses in 1892. Kipling later returned to the theme in a group of poems collected in The Seven Seas under the same title. A third group of vernacular Army poems from the Boer War titled "Service Songs" and published in The Five Nations 1903 can be considered part of the Ballads as can a number of other uncollected pieces.
