While copyright stating 1899 this wasn't published until 1930 as indicated by mention of Edgar Wallace's "The Stretelli Case and Other Mystery Stories" and "Silinski Master Criminal" on the dust-jacket ; In November 1887 Kipling was transferred from the Civil and Military Gazette in Lahore to the Pioneer in Allahabad.
