The print runs of these copyright editions is frequently estimated at 50 to 75 copies. In Kipling's era US copyright law did not protect British authors and unless their work was first published in the US it could be impossible to secure a American copyright protection. As a solution Kipling's publisher arranged for small chapbooks of which this is an example to be published. First edition first printing. Top edge gilt. Each 20 × 13cm vi 276pp &299pp 2pp ads. In his Mowgli stories Rudyard Kipling expertly interweaves myth morals adventure and powerful story-telling. Set in Central India Mowgli is raised by a pack of wolves and along the way he encounters tiger Shere Kahn Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear. The Jungle Book also includes other stories such as that of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi a heroic mongoose and Toomai a young elephant handler. The Second Jungle Book Kipling's sequel to The Jungle Book was first published in 1895 it features five stories about Mowgli and three unrelated stories with all but one set in India. Condition: Both books are in very good condition. There is a little bumping and rubbing to the board's tips and minor spotting to the page edges. Christ's Hospital school prize label to each volume to the same pupil. Internally the books are clean bar a very little marginal spotting and the bindings are secure.
