A bit of rubbing to the gilding front inner hinge very slightly cracking otherwise a very good bright copy. Fifth second English edition reprinting the text of the fourth First English edition and like it printed by Clowes & Sons. Nonetheless the claim was made replicating Kipling's hand and signature in the gilt cover decoration that new "Ditties & Verses" were included in this edition. The ads are dated September 1890. 1950121867New York: The Modern Library 1950. First Modern Library edition of what many consider Kipling's masterpiece. Octavo original cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Kim unfolds against the backdrop of The Great Game the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. The novel made the term "Great Game" popular and introduced the theme of great power rivalry and intrigue. It is set after the Second Afghan War which ended in 1881 but before the Third probably in the period 1893 to 1898. The novel is notable for its detailed portrait of the people culture and varied religions of India. "The book presents a vivid picture of India its teeming populations religions and superstitions and the life of the bazaars and the road." Considered by many to be Kipling's masterpiece opinion appears varied about its consideration as children's literature or not. Roger Sale in his history of children's literature concludes "Kim is the apotheosis of the Victorian cult of childhood but it shines now as bright as ever long after the Empire's collapse." Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2003 the book was listed on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novel." First U.S. edition with the Townsend illustrations. According to some critics "The Brushwood Boy" is the best of all Kipling's short stories. This notable dream story was first published in December 1895 in the Century Magazine. It was first collected with Kipling's revisions in The Day's Work 1898. The story was first published separately in 1899 by Doubleday and McClure Company with 17 full-page illustrations by Orson Lowell and again in 1907 with the Townsend illustrations unlike the 1899 edition the 1907 edition was published in Britain as well by Macmillan.
