This edition had five new poems as well as alterations to three poems not published in England until 1897. Very scarce - only 750 copies of this book were printed. A notoriously fragile book - this copy is largely complete. It is missing nearly all of the spine strip. Original thin paper-covered boards. There are a couple of notable creases to these boards - a shortish one to the front board but a lengthy crease to the rear boardwhich extends the whole length of the board - this may well have been a little repaired in the past. The boards are somewhat soiled and stained. There is a contemporary ink short gift inscription to the half-title page. Otherwise the pages remain very clean and tight. This is the FIRST EDITION of the book. Rare in the EXCELLENT condition. Joseph Rudyard Kipling 30 December 1865 - 18 January 1936 was a British author and poet born in India and best known for his children's books including The Jungle Book 1894 The Second Jungle Book 1895 Just So Stories 1902 and Puck of Pook's Hill 1906; his novel Kim 1901; his poems including Mandalay 1890 Gunga Din 1890 and "If" 1895; and his many short stories including The Man Who Would Be King 1888 and the collections Life's Handicap 1891 The Day's Work 1898 and Plain Tales from the Hills 1888. He is regarded as a major "innovator in the art of the short story"; his children's books are enduring classics of children's literature; and his best work speaks to a versatile and luminous narrative gift. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in English in both prose and verse in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The author Henry James famously said of him: "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius as distinct from fine intelligence that I have ever known." In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature making him the first English language writer to receive the prize and he remains today its youngest-ever recipient. Among other honours he was offered the British poet laureateship and a knighthood both of which he refused. However later in life Kipling also came to be seen in George Orwell's words as a "prophet of British imperialism." The Naulahka: A Story of West and East was originally serialized in Century Magazine from November 1891 to July 1892. Written in by Kipling in collaboration with American writer and publishing agent Wolcott Balestier and set in the fictional state of "Rahore" believed to be based on Rajputana it is an intriguing story of ambition love and royal court trappings. Kipling would later name his historic Shingle Style house in Dummerston Vermont Naulakha where he resided from 1893 to 1896 and wrote Captains Courageous The Jungle Book The Day's Work and The Seven Seas and did work on Kim and The Just So Stories. Volume 5 has a wrinkle on the rear cover. Volumes 14 and 15 have partially-cracked rear gutters. None of these defects really detract from the handsome nature of the set which should assume a proud place of honor as they provide many hours of entertaining reading. Among the first of the authors books to be published in the U.S. While this copy does indeed have a Table of Contents page that is placed after the printed facsimile letter in Kipling's hand and a title page as Lovell Coryell & Co. along with their address and no date printed at the base of same and furthermore has a binding where the base of the cloth spine is blank that is not stamped with any publisher information all which seem to be indices that suggest that this is a later issue this copy not only has a printed page following the half-title page which reads in total "This edition of my collected writings is issued in America with my cordial sanction / Rudyard Kipling / London March 1891" but also has the portrait frontispiece which is said NOT to be part of the Lovell and Coryell issue !!! Also it is not quite clear as to why the Lovell and Coryell issue does not "precede" the United States Book Company issue if in fact the United States Book Company is the successor "to" the John W. Presentation inscription "To Harry From A.S.S. and P.R.S September 13-92". Harry is Harry leslie Sherwood who entered the Foreign Office in 1882 rising to become Inspector General of H.M. Consulates and editor of the F.O. List-the donors are assumed to be members of his family. The book contains 2 press cuttings including the first printed version of "The Absent-minded Beggar" published by the Daily Mail on 31st October 1899. The poem is headed "Rudyard Kipling's New Poem" with "Copyright in England and America by the "Daily Mail" publishing company." Although there is no date on the newspaper indications are that it was printed in 1899. The rights to publish had been given by Kipling to Lord Harmsworth proprietor of the Daily Mail who had made a request to Kipling to write a patriotic poem to support the fund-raising for the mobilistation of army reservists in 1899 to fight in South Africa. <br/> <br/> Methuen and Co.
