Kipling's The Drums of the Fore and Aft concerns an inexperienced Regular battalion on overseas service brigaded with a Highland Regiment and a Gurkha Regiment in Afghanistan. 1895119977London: Macmillan and Co. 1895. First edition of Kipling's Second Jungle Book. Octavo original blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine and gilt vignette to the front panel all edges gilt pictorial title pages illustrated. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Contemporary ownership inscription. Kipling's Jungle Books center on the story of Mowgli an orphaned 'man-cub' who is raised in the jungle of India by wolves where he comes to learn the Laws of the Jungle. A major theme throughout the books is abandonment followed by fostering as in the life of Mowgli echoing Kipling's own childhood. Another is law vs. freedom; the stories are not about animal behavior but about human archetypes in animal form. The books remain popular to this day and have been adapted several times for film and other media including the classic Walt Disney 1967 animation and its 2016 remake. Macmillan and Co. hardcover

1900149441900. Also Letters from Julian Ralph Charles E. Hands and Douglas Story. Santiago de Chile: Hume & Co. 1900. Original printed fawn wrappers.

First Edition unauthorized issued as a volume in the publisher's "Libreria Inglesa." This volume published in Chile includes three poems and two stories that Kipling wrote during the Boer War plus four poems written earlier; it is the first edition in book form anywhere of the poems "Pharaoh and the Sergeant" and "Kitchener's School" and of the Boer War tales "With Number Three" and "Surgical and Medical." "It has been said that this is the only case on record of a first edition of a book being published in a country never visited by the author and where people did not speak his language" Richards. Hume the proprietor of Santiago's main bookstore was a huge Kipling fan but it appears that he overestimated the Chilean Kipling market: he supposedly printed 400 copies but few sold and the remainder were either burned in 1906 or pulped at a paper mill in 1911 -- though some copies like this one apparently were neither read nor burned nor pulped. For this copy is as new -- no wear no soil leaves still unopened. Richards A166; Stewart 240. Housed in a cloth slipcase with inner chemise. unknown

1897211
Kipling Rudyard. Hindu Tales In Black and White. Translated from English by V.N. Ofrosimov. St. Petersburg 1897 107 pp. 22 x 15 cm.

Kipling is the most "Russian" of all Western writers of the 20th century not in terms of character or worldview but in terms of the intensity of his influence. No other country in the world loved The Jungle Book so much the best cartoon based on it was made in the USSR the best music for the radio play was written by Gubaidulina herself children of all Soviet generations played Mowgli Bagheera and Shere Khan and by the way we correctly adjusted the gender of Kipling's two main characters. The cat who walks by himself became a cat in our version and the fairy tale became more accurate funnier and more sarcastic and Bagheera who was also a brave young man in Kipling's version turned into a cunning queen of the jungle sometimes protecting Mowgli sometimes in love with him; a kind of Catherine with a young favorite. But most importantly Kipling became the foremost poet in Russia. At the same time he is rather marginal in England and even more so in the United States where incidentally his favorite was Eliot an avant-gardist and certainly not an imperialist; "A bad poet who writes excellent poems" he said of Kipling and this is a very accurate description.

Despite Kipling's popularity in the USSR translations of his works began long before the October Revolution and the establishment of Soviet power. The first translations appeared in 1896 and at the beginning of the 20th century several new translations were published each year. In 1916 an 11-volume collection of his works was released.

The book on offer Hindu Tales 1897 is one of the first translations of Kipling into Russian. It is in decent condition with a worn cover from the era and the stamp of a private collector.

WorldCat shows only two copies in libraries worldwide Berkeley and Yale.
