This is no.6 of the "Indian Railway Library" series published by A.H. Wheeler & Co with a cover price of "One Rupee." The original grey-green illustrated wrappers both front and back credited to the "Moto School of Art Lahore" have been bound into this beautiful hardcover signed binding by Brentano's. The front wrapper features three men and a boy while the back wrapper shows two flute-playing soldiers. The front and back of the book feature ads for and reviews of other works by Kipling. Binding with some minor rubbing to extremities and minor smudging to the covers. A faint horizontal scratch to the front cover. Interior with a small closed tear to the bottom of the gutter at the interior front cover. Light spotting along the edge of the book block the front free endpapers and the bound in front wrapper. Binding and interior in very good condition overall. No.6 of the "Indian Railway Library" series by AH Wheeler & Co. These where originally sold at railway stations in India in softcover editions. First edition in the publisher's original paper wraps. Scarce.From the library of A. P. Watt & A. S. Watt of A. P. Watt and Son literary agent of Rudyard Kipling. Written by celebrated English novelist poet and short-story writer Rudyard Kipling known for his popular work 'The Jungle Book'. This collection of poetry was published in Chile with many of the poems written during Kipling's time working for the British War effort in the Boer War. Comprised of seven poems and two articles with two of the poems and both articles appearing here in book-form for the first time. This collection also includes letters from author Julian Ralph reporter Charles E. Hands and Douglas Story. This collection is suggested to be the only known case of a book being published in a country that was never visited by the author. The publisher Hume & Co. was said to be an huge admirer of Kipling's although overestimated the public demand meaning his print-run of 400 copies were largely left unsold or burnt. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally very smart with light offsetting and a little sunning. Small mark to the head of the rear wrap with slight markings from the staples externally and to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages clean with slight age toning. One of the great nineteenth-century English adventure novels Captains Courageous follows the adventures of fifteen-year-old Harvey Cheyne Jr. the spoiled son of a railroad tycoon after he is saved from drowning by a Portuguese fisherman off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. After being tossed overboard an ocean liner Harvey meets Disko Troop captain of the small fishing boat We're Here who refuses to take the young man back to port but agrees to take him on as part of the crew. Over the course of the novel Harvey befriends the captain's son Dan who helps the arrogant millionaire develop into a hard-working honest young man who is self-reliant and content with living simply. <br /> The novel originally appeared as a serialization in McClure's between November 1896 and May 1897. In 1900 Teddy Roosevelt extolled the book in his essay "What We Can Expect of the American Boy" praising Kipling for describing "in the liveliest way just what a boy should be and do".<br /> "The work has always been popular in the USA and various versions have been filmed." Sutherland p. 104.<br /> <br /> The English journalist novelist poet and short-story writer Joseph Rudyard Kipling 1865 - 1936 was born in British India which inspired much of his work.
