Ninth edition. In very good condition. Kipling published his first collection of verse Departmental Ditties in 1886 a year that also brought a change to the editors at the Civil and Military Gazette which allowed him more creative freedom and the ability to contribute short stories to the newspaper. Octavo original wrappers. In very good condition. Rare. Written when Rudyard Kipling was 26 years old The Light That Failed is semi-autobiographical; being based upon his own unrequited love for Florence Garrard. Most of the novel is set in London but many important events throughout the story occur in Sudan and Port Said. It follows the life of Dick Heldar an artist and painter who goes blind and his unrequited love for his childhood playmate Maisie. Though it was poorly received by critics the novel has remained in print for over a century. It was also adapted into a play two silent films as well as a drama film. In near fine condition. English journalist short-story writer poet and novelist Rudyard Kipling was one of the most popular writers in the British Empire in both prose and verse in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1907. Kipling's The Drums of the Fore and Aft concerns an inexperienced Regular battalion on overseas service brigaded with a Highland Regiment and a Gurkha Regiment in Afghanistan. These two volumes discuss the experiences of the Irish guards from 1914 to 1918. The point of view is the battalions with the assistance of Regimental diaries private letters and documents. In his beautiful way Kipling transports the reader back to that sunny summer of 1914 when the rampant optimism gave way to the horror of the trenches. Kipling lost his son at Loos his remains not identified until 1992. It is his ability to write with power that makes this an eminently readable copy even now in the 21st century. Volume II also contains on pages 217-284 an index appendix A; Officers who were killed; B. NCO's who were killed and C. the award from the Victoria Cross to the many distinguished service medals. A fine set beautifully bound in a modern 3/4 black leather over black cloth raised bands compartments lettered and decorated in gilt top edges gilt endpapers renewed housed within black cloth slipcase. Octavo original cloth original publisher's decorated dark green cloth with gilt titles to the spine and front panel top edge gilt illustrated. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Kim unfolds against the backdrop of The Great Game the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. The novel made the term "Great Game" popular and introduced the theme of great power rivalry and intrigue. It is set after the Second Afghan War which ended in 1881 but before the Third probably in the period 1893 to 1898. The novel is notable for its detailed portrait of the people culture and varied religions of India. "The book presents a vivid picture of India its teeming populations religions and superstitions and the life of the bazaars and the road." Considered by many to be Kipling's masterpiece opinion appears varied about its consideration as children's literature or not. Roger Sale in his history of children's literature concludes "Kim is the apotheosis of the Victorian cult of childhood but it shines now as bright as ever long after the Empire's collapse." Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2003 the book was listed on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novel." 1919004965England 1919. Cloth. Near Fine. Lovely meticulously rendered vignette illustrations framing the key letter on each page and on a few pages two vignettes. Oblong 9 by 13 cm. 28 pp. The album opens to a particularly nice pen and ink drawing of a schooner framed with highly decorative foliate baroque ornamentation. The first poem is Kipling's "If" each letter device accompanied by a painting of a different type of sail boat or ship. Ship motives are used again in "Love at Sea" by Swinburne. Another Kipling poem "The Explanation" is enlivened with paintings of colorful expressive fish. In our judgment these are the most charismatic of the illustrations. Other poems include Swinburne's "Rondel" "Before Sunset" "Song" and "Child's Song"; and some verses by Sappho. Other illustrative motives take in dragons flowers and floral daipers butterflies and coasts. The poems are rendered in a neat calligraphic hand and it is very easy to imagine this manuscript as something that might have been published as a gift book. <br/><br/> hardcover books
