1894120935London: Macmillan 1894-95. First editions of both volumes of The Jungle Book. Octavo two volumes original blue cloth decorated and lettered in gilt all edges gilt engraved frontispiece with tissue guard present. Illustrated by J. L. Kipling W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. In very good condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. A live-action anticipated version of Jungle Book will be released in October of 2018 by Warner Brothers. Macmillan hardcover books

189719555EMaidencombe: 4 1/2†x 7†May 4 1897. Original autograph letter signed by the author Rudyard Kipling on printed stationery from Rock House Maidencombe St. Marychurch where he and his wife lived between 1896 and 1898. The letter reads in full: “Dear Watson Many thanks for your note and the contract which certainly opens a new and safe method of burglary. I always said that the Oriental thief can give his white brothers many points in the game. The necklace he chose was amethyst & pearl - not emerald & pearl - and it is a beauty. I should very much like to be able to afford a white pearl necklace. Do you suppose the price would be very heavy I should like to have an idea on this subject. Bombay must have been a ghastly place this winter. My sister’s letters gave me some of the news as she learned it and it seems to have been fearful. Always sincerely yours Rudyard.†Near fine with a hint of use and a single crease from folding. 4 1/2†x 7†unknown

In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize and to date he remains its youngest recipient. Original red cloth with Ganesha device in gilt with dust jacket.

First English Edition of the book that "is acknowledged as Kipling's masterpiece in fiction. The novel is the finest written about the India of the British Empire" CGEL. It follows the adventures of an orphan son of a British soldier who is raised by an Indian woman becomes a disciple to a Lama and ultimately becomes an undercover agent as well. The illustrations are by John Lockwood Kipling the author's father. The American edition is considered to have been published earlier though in the same month as the English one. As with most of Kipling's British editions published by Macmillan the binding is red cloth with in gilt the "Ganesha" device -- an elephant's head with a swastika the latter had been a ubiquitous symbol in India for millennia; its use ceased in the early 1930s when events in Germany gave the symbol a whole new meaning. 1919149313London: His Majesty's Stationery Office 1919. Exceptionally rare first edition of this pamphlet honoring every British soldier who died in World War I. Oblong octavo original publisher's pictorial wrappers illustrated with black and white drawings of the cemeteries and memorials as they will appear completed throughout. In near fine condition. Illustrated by Mr. Douglas Macpherson. Housed in a custom red portfolio with gilt titles to the front panel and string ties. Rudyard Kipling’s The Graves of the Fallen 1919 written for the Imperial War Graves Commission articulates the moral and aesthetic vision behind the design and commemoration of British and Commonwealth soldiers’ graves after World War I. Serving as the Commission’s literary adviser Kipling helped shape its guiding principles of equality in death—ensuring that all soldiers regardless of rank or class were memorialized with identical headstones and inscriptions. The text blends solemn prose with restrained idealism reflecting both personal grief—Kipling’s son was killed in the war—and a collective commitment to remembrance. 19156
12mo. AEG. 276 pp. 4 pp. ads. Publisher's presentation blue cloth binding with illustrated dust jacket. The evidence indicates that this jacket and binding are original unused stock from the 1890s. During the 1900-20 period Macmillan offered four Kipling titles - The Jungle Book The Second Jungle Book Captains Courageous and Soldier Tales - in "special bindings for presentation" in addition to the standard red cloth trade editions. The bindings and jackets used for this special offering match the original bindings and jackets issued on those same four titles in the 1890s and at the same 6-shillings price on the jacket spines. If Macmillan had been issuing new bindings and jackets to replicate the 1890s style it probably would not have included Soldier Tales a very slow seller in such an offering. Nor were any popular post-1900 titles such as Kim or Puck of Pook's Hill included in this special offering - just the four titles that originally had the ornate blue bindings and illustrated jackets in the 1890s - thus the conclusion that Macmillan was using up leftover bindings and jackets. This copy slightly musty and cocked usual endpaper offsetting binding clean and unworn very good jacket with minor perimeter chips and tears but almost no loss a few bits of old tape on underside but clean complete and attractive. Kipling's classic children's story with a rare 1890s jacket of which only a handful survived on 1890s copies and with few if any surviving examples recorded on presentation copies - not seen by Richards for his 2010 Kipling bibliography.
