First separate illustrated edition. Copy #5 of twenty copies with the limitation statement amended by Kipling and signed by him with the denotation in another hand reserving these copies "for Mr. Lewis Freeman" the photographer. The ordinary edition consisted of 377 signed copies. The publisher retained the twenty copies for distribution to different parties according to Freeman's wishes. Freeman enjoyed a distinguished career as explorer journalist and war correspondent and his photographs accompanying Kipling's poems cover a wide range of his travels and interests. One page on Bateman's Burwash Etchingham letterhead the letter reads in full "Sep. 2 1907 Dear Sir: In reply to your letter of the 28th Aug. I am afraid that 'Kaspar's Song In Varda' is one of my own compositions and that you will not find it in the works of your great poet. Sincerely yours Rudyard Kipling R. G. Von Berg." Also known as 'Butterflies' 'Kaspar's Song in Varda' was a sister-poem that accompanied Kipling's short story 'Wireless' first published in Scribner's Magazine in 1902 and later collected in Traffics and Discoveries. Kipling claimed the poem to have been a translation of an old Swedish poem from the Swedish of Stagnelius. Double-matted with a portrait of Kipling. In fine condition. In near fine condition. A sharp example. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937.
