1943122437Cambridge Massachusetts: Houghton Library 1943. First edition in book form of this previously unpublished letter written by Kipling to William Joshua Harding seeking an army commission for his son John. Octavo original wrappers as issued. One of only seventy-five numbered copies this is number 32. In fine condition. Rare. Kipling's son John was about three years old when this letter was written. Despite his son's short-sightedness Kipling sought to get him an army commission when the First World War broke out in August 1914. John was killed in the Battle of Loos causing his family immense grief and placing a great strain on the marriage as Kipling's wife had strongly opposed his enlisting. Later Kipling wrote of him "I had a boy who came near writing stories about Kangaroos and Queensland pearl-fishers. But another call came and Johnny went to France where the stars are still shining although Johnny's drum has ceased to beat. Houghton Library unknown

1931BIBLIO-51282James Tregaskis & Son London first edition thus 1931. Limited edition of 500 copies. Full calf gilt spine-title 8vo 25cm. xii 2 336 pp ills. A handsome edition containing all that Tusser wrote including a few 'Sonnets' his 'Beliefe' - a metrical creed- 'Posies' for the several chambers of a house a rhymed account of his own life and translations from St. Augustine and St. Bernard. The great majority of these are from Hillmans 'Tusser Redivivus' of 1710 although the text of the 1580 edition has been carefully followed. They are rare and full of curious country lore explanatory of their author and his occasional obscurities. There is a very full glossary of archaic technical and dialect words in addition to copious notes on the text. Kipling prompted this new edition writing of Tusser that "In many ways he is as modem as to-morrowand his incidental verses .are extraordinarily good.What I like about him is that he does not seem to have made much of a success of his own job - whereby he came to know what he was writing about. He was so dead keen to impart his knowledge to his neighbours I dont think he ever thought much beyond his own county that he rammed his maxims into his metre with a sledge-hammer. The contents with toning to the endpapers scattered foxing and creasing to the corners of some of the tipped-in plates are otherwise in very good order. Inscribed in black ink to the front free endpaper: "S. Lawes. 1st Royal Berkshire. / December 25th - IH. / 4th London Genera Hospital / Denmark Hill. / Presented by His Majesty King George V" not in the King's hand.</p><p>Published in aid of the Belgium Fund the work includes contributions from over 250 figures from the worlds of literature art politics music and science.</p><p>Certainly not an uncommon book but an evocative copy presented by King George V to a wounded soldier on Christmas Day 1914 just five months in to the First World War. Original dark blue cloth gilt-lettered and elaborately gilt-decorated on the upper board and spine with an elephant medallion design; gilt rules to boards. Top edge gilt.</p><p>The binding is somewhat tender but all holding firm and square with only light rubbing to extremities and a couple of knocks to corners. The gilt remains notably bright and well defined. Internally the text is clean and sound with the occasional faint spot of foxing chiefly to the preliminary and terminal leaves. A little loss to top corner of first three leaves with an early gift inscription - unobtrusive and neatly penned - to the front free endpaper. The coloured plates by Joseph M.
