1897120712London: Macmillan 1897. First edition of Kipling's richly detailed tale of American deep-sea fishing with frontispiece and 21 illustrations by I.W. Taber. Octavo original blue cloth elegantly stamped in gilt. In near fine condition with light shelfwear. An exceptional example. Like his two Jungle Books Kipling wrote this morality tale of life aboard a New England fishing boat while living near Brattleboro Vermont his wife's hometown. The book thus contains "something of his feelings about America--both his affection and his irritation" Carpenter & Prichard 296. "This is the only book of Kipling's which is set entirely in America. All the characters are American. Not only that but the heart of the book--its moral in a single sentence--is one of Kipling's main beliefs of this period expressed in terms essentially American or perhaps more particularly New England. He put it later in verse: 'And the Gods of the Copy-book Maxims said: 'If you don't work you will die!' It is a saga of hard physical work in conflict with natural forces. It is a book which could hardly have been written by anyone who did not admire Huckleberry Finn; it is a book whose claim to survival rests mainly on detail and it is all American detail" Mason 119. 1894RK062London: Macmillan and Co. 1894 First edition first printing. Illustrated by John Lockwood Kipling William Henry Drake and Paul Frenzeny. Original publisher's navy cloth spine lettered in gilt pictorial jungle images based on artwork by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling stamped to the front board in gilt all edges gilt green coated endpapers. A good copy with wear moderate wear and rubbing to the spine spine ends frayed corners worn lean to spine; internally ownership blindstamp to first blank spine cracked at pages 128/129. Overall a good presentable copy in the original publisher's cloth. The Jungle Book is a collection of short stories and verses the most famous of which relate to the feral child protagonist Mowgli a "man cub." While they can be read independently of each other each chapter serves as a fable using animal figures to provide a moral lesson. In each volume the short stories are both preceded and followed by poems or songs including the notable "Mowgli's Song" and "The Law of the Jungle." The Jungle Books based on the author's childhood and later work experience in British India are indicative of Western Orientalist ideology at the turn of the 20th century which is somewhat softened by Kipling's fondness for his former home. Both Jungle Books are illustrated by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling who was a practicing illustrator and art professor in Bombay. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Good. 1942WRCLIT77652Garden City: Doubleday Doran & Co. 1942. Cloth backed marbled boards t.e.g. Endsheets discolored from the binding glue utilized a few foxmarks at fore-edge else near fine. Second separate American printing following the 1934 U.S. copyright printing and the text's inclusion in the Sussex edition and the Burwash edition. This is one of only ten copies privately printed on handmade paper for presentation by the publisher. Kipling's text is preceded by a prefatory letter "My dear Mr. President:" outlining the background of the text by Alexander Woolcott signed in type noting "Nelson Doubleday has now put it into type for one of the many idle hours which must hang heavy on your hands these days." If the dedication to "Mr. President" suggests that this highly limited edition was undertaken in part for presentation to FDR the notion of FDR having "many idle hours" must be described as ironic. While not the first appearance of the text in book form it is much less common than the copyright printing 75 copies and as a production of Kipling's authorized U.S. publisher it must enjoy some bibliographic merit.
