Originally conceived as bedtime stories for the author's daughter the tales and poems included here tell how the first letter and alphabet came to be the origin of animals such as the armadillo and how several animals came to look the way they do the camel for example was sanctioned with a hump for his laziness. Written in a playful and rhythmic style the stories have enchanted generations of young people and earned a place among the classics of children's literature. Macmillan and Co unknown

Pictorial red cloth blocked in white and black. The white blocking on these first state bindings was severely flaking even as the books were being produced and the publishers quickly switched to a more stable white pigment. Head and tail of spine slightly pushed. Bottom corner of front cover bumped. Very good. Scarce in the first state. Macmillan, London. hardcover
