Translated by Kamuran Serif Saru. Captains Courageous is an 1897 novel by Rudyard Kipling that follows the adventures of fifteen-year-old Harvey Cheyne Jr. the spoiled son of a railroad tycoon after he is saved from drowning by a Portuguese fisherman in the North Atlantic. The novel originally appeared as a serialization in McClure's beginning with the November 1896 edition. The following year it was published in its entirety as a novel first in the United States by Doubleday and a month later in the United Kingdom by Macmillan. It is Kipling's only novel set entirely in America. In 1900 Teddy Roosevelt extolled the book in his essay "What We Can Expect of the American Boy" praising Kipling for describing "in the liveliest way just what a boy should be and do.". The book's title comes from the ballad Mary Ambree which starts "When captains courageous whom death could not daunt". Kipling had previously used the same title for an article on businessmen as the new adventurers published in The Times of 23 November 1892. Translator Kamuran Serif Saru was famous with his Shakespeare translations into Ottoman Turkish and modern Turkish. Özege: 2971.

Selâmet Matbaasi hardcover

1943122437Cambridge Massachusetts: Houghton Library 1943. First edition in book form of this previously unpublished letter written by Kipling to William Joshua Harding seeking an army commission for his son John. Octavo original wrappers as issued. One of only seventy-five numbered copies this is number 32. In fine condition. Rare. Kipling's son John was about three years old when this letter was written. Despite his son's short-sightedness Kipling sought to get him an army commission when the First World War broke out in August 1914. John was killed in the Battle of Loos causing his family immense grief and placing a great strain on the marriage as Kipling's wife had strongly opposed his enlisting. Later Kipling wrote of him "I had a boy who came near writing stories about Kangaroos and Queensland pearl-fishers. But another call came and Johnny went to France where the stars are still shining although Johnny's drum has ceased to beat. Houghton Library unknown

Moscow: Moscow Publishing House 1908. 320 XXIV p. 1 leaf portrait. Hardcover standard format. This 1908 Moscow edition is a bibliophilic treasure of the Russian Silver Age. Published as a lifetime edition of Rudyard Kipling it is part of the prestigious "Library of Foreign Writers" series edited by the future Nobel laureate Ivan Bunin marking it as a project of significant literary ambition. The volume is distinguished by its original illustrated title page created by Ivan Bilibin the master of Russian Art Nouveau and children's book illustration whose distinctive style elevates this as a work of art. The selection of stories translated by Nikolai Pusheshnikov introduced Kipling's complex narratives of British India to the Russian intelligentsia. As a pre-revolutionary publication from a famed literary series with a direct connection to Bunin and featuring Bilibin's artwork this book is a highly collectible artifact of early 20th-century Russian publishing and cultural exchange. 1923BIBLIO-51288N.p. n.d Dover first edition 1923. Edition of 60 copies or fewer. Patterned wrappers 'Indian design' 8vo. 8 leaves. From David Richard's 'Rudyard Kipling : A Bibliography': "The complementary texts are those of a letter written to Kipling by local postmaster Francis Fatt and the authors answer originally appearing in the Medicine Hat News of 22 December 1910. deprecating a suggestion that the name of Medicine Hat in the province of Alberta Canada be changed to something less colorful. This pamphlet was printed and distributed as a New Years favor and greeting by George Parker Winship then the Assistant Librarian of Harvard College." Kipling robustly concludes his advice: "What then should a city be re-christened that has sold its name - Judasville". Winship's publication was not authorized by Kipling and the work was never collected by Kipling in any edition of his works somewhat reinforcing Winship's statement in his preface: "This little tract for the times is printed in order that certain gentlemen who are known to their intimate acquaintances as Kipling fans may possess a first separate edition which some of their rivals in the engrossing game of book collecting will not be able to buy."
