1937BIBLIO-12267Macmillan and Co. Ltd London Sussex Edition 1937. From the limited edition of 525 sets of which 500 were for sale. Full russet Niger morocco contrasting black-and-gilt title panes on spine handmade paper gilt top other edges untrimmed as issued marbled endpapers royal 8vo. vii-viii 373 2 pp. The Sussex Edition is the finest edition of Kipling's works sumptuously produced and also containing his final thoughts on the text having been revised by Kipling in his last years. Kipling died in 1936 and the edition was published posthumously. Complete sets of the 35 volumes are rare and desirable : only 525 sets were produced and many of these were destroyed when the publisher's warehouse was bombed in 1941. Single volumes such as that offered here are in practice still harder to find : we have a handful only of such volumes. This volume collects together the contents of three of Kipling's "Railway Library" volumes first published at the start of his career in India : Soldiers Three the first collection of the adventures of Mulvaney Learoyd and Ortheris 1888; The Story of the Gadsbys 1888 and In Black and White 1889. 1919004965England 1919. Cloth. Near Fine. Lovely meticulously rendered vignette illustrations framing the key letter on each page and on a few pages two vignettes. Oblong 9 by 13 cm. 28 pp. The album opens to a particularly nice pen and ink drawing of a schooner framed with highly decorative foliate baroque ornamentation. The first poem is Kipling's "If" each letter device accompanied by a painting of a different type of sail boat or ship. Ship motives are used again in "Love at Sea" by Swinburne. Another Kipling poem "The Explanation" is enlivened with paintings of colorful expressive fish. In our judgment these are the most charismatic of the illustrations. Other poems include Swinburne's "Rondel" "Before Sunset" "Song" and "Child's Song"; and some verses by Sappho. Other illustrative motives take in dragons flowers and floral daipers butterflies and coasts. The poems are rendered in a neat calligraphic hand and it is very easy to imagine this manuscript as something that might have been published as a gift book. unknown
