Kipling's memorial ode for his friend and hero Lord Roberts one of Britain's greatest generals whom he had earlier celebrated in "Bobs". "Lord Roberts" was written soon after Roberts' death in November 1914 - shortly before that Roberts had helped Kipling's son John secure a commission in his own regiment the Irish Guards to fight in France. Kipling had known and admired Roberts since his days as a young journalist in India in the 1880's and at the end of his own life Kipling wrote in "Something of Myself" that "the proudest moment of my young life was riding up Simla Mall besides Lord Roberts who asked me what the men were thinking.
