195473556London: Secker and Warburg 1954. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. The first edition in English translated by Ernst Kaiser and Eithne Wilkins. The title story was never completed but is significant as showing Kafka at the outset of his literary career already a master of language but still uncertain how best to handle his material whether to write in the first person singular or whether to adopt the famous "K" as the symbol for his hero. A volume in the Definitive Edition of The Works of Franz Kafka. Octavo. Original blue cloth binding with gilt titles. The boards are ever so slightly bowed with some fading along the spine and a minor bump to the spine head. The dust jacket is browned along the spine and folds with a single tape reinforcement to the verso; else very good. Secker and Warburg hardcover books
