Bound in publisher's brown cloth stamped in gilt with top edge speckled brown; housed in the original tan cardstock slipcase with spine stamped in brown. 363 p. Near Fine with trivial rubbing to spine ends corners and gilt at raised relief on upper board. In a Very Good slipcase with soiling and light wear and a short repair to the seam at the opening along the bottom edge. A wonderful copy housed in a custom brown cloth solander case with morocco spine label stamped in gilt. A visually striking production which combines James Joyce's modernist masterpiece with twenty-six illustrations by Matisse including six hand-printed etchings and twenty lithographs. Modern blue half morocco gilt over marbled boards bookplate of Giles Alexander Esme Gordon to front pastedown. Front free endpaper with some marginal restoration a few small unrestored closed tears to preliminary leaves a little occasional foxing a few gatherings a little roughly opened. Housed in a custom morocco-backed clamshell case. A Very Good copy. <br /> <br /> Arguably the key text of the Modernist movement. "Joyce not to mince words is Ireland's Shakespeare its Goethe its Racine its Tolstoy" John Sutherland. The book also proved to be a major test case for laws of freedom of expression. Octavo ii 732pp 733-736pp. Rebound in three-quarter blue morocco marbled boards title stamped in gilt on spine with decorative raised bands. Top edge gilt. Includes the half-title lacking original blue wrappers. Short closed tear through p. 1 delicate leafends some minor loss. New endpapers. Slocum notes that this printing was issued on "inferior quality" paper which is evident in the toning throughout this copy. Text block resown. Slocum & Cahoon A17 The text corrections noted on the original errata were largely corrected by this fourth printing but "additional corrections" were discovered and incorporated into the four-page errata on page 733-736. An attractive presentation. This copy is from the library of Oliver Marble Gale Jr. with his bookplate affixed to the front free endpaper. Oliver M. Gale 1910-2006 was a pioneer in corporate public relations and advertising credited with establishing a dedicated public relations department at Procter & Gamble in 1949.
