"Manju netsuke have never been the subject of a book on netsuke. Many books ignore them completely and it is hoped that this catalogue will throw light on the differences between the manju and other better-known types of netsuke. Dr. Barnett was one of a handful of collectors of one particular type of netsuke the manju. These were not widely appreciated until about ten years ago when interest began to increase and the exquisite workmanship and design of this group of carvers was noticed as an art in its own right and one which presents the artist with a challenge completely different from the more popular katabori netsuke carved in the round. Dr. Barnett continued to collect until just before her death in 2000 by which time she had acquired some of the finest pieces to be sold over 30 years which will be presented in this book. Manju netsuke have played a small part in the many publications on netsuke but there has never been a catalogue entirely devoted to the subject. The book aims to provide a description of each object and to explain the tales they illustrate and the sources of these tales from literature and printed picture books. The range of subjects is wide and includes religious images scenes from festivals the theatre historical incidents folktales classical literature and themes from nature."--Publisher's description. 193420636New York: Farrar & Rinehart Inc. Very Good in Very Good dj. c.1934. First Edition. Hardcover. spine considerably turned but otherwise very little wear to book; the very attractive jacket has a few teensy-tiny nicks along top edge spine sun-browned light soiling to rear panel. pen & ink drawings Novel with rather a weird premise: during World War I while serving in France with the Canadian Army as did the author the protagonist of this tale has occasion to apparently kill the same German officer twice and then to encounter him yet a third time and witness his execution as a spy -- all of which has the cumulative effect of driving him stark raving mad. He eventually recovers but I know you've only counted to three and sure enough years later when he and his wife are skiing in Switzerland he is rescued after an accident on the slopes by a young German who appears to be the same guy! The jacket blurb says the story "has as its core mystery and compelling suspense though it is completely out of the category of detective fiction. It is a story of horror though unlike The Werewolf of Paris or The Cadaver of Gideon Wyck it has no time for atmosphere as it is preeminently a narrative of action. It takes as its background the World War although it is not a war story." The New York Times reviewer called it "a quite exceptional achievement a singular and powerful story." The author directed a handful of feature films in Hollywood in the half-dozen or so years prior to the publication of this book; his next book "They Gave Him a Gun" is probably his best known by virtue of having been made into the M-G-M film of the same name. .
