Book is tight slight spine slant sharp-cornered and Very Good. No jacket. Stated as Tenth Edition on copyright page but only date is 1939. Code B-P. The story has been interpreted as contemptuous nod to the Hearstian reality of the United States in the early part of the 20th century: Jo Stoyte is an allegory for William Randolph Hearst by his acquisitions of art etc. and living in an opulent estatesimilar to Hearst Castlewith Virginia who can be taken as a parody of Marion Davies. Orson Welles may have been inspired by this novelafter RKO Radio Pictures rejected Welles's two earlier ideas for scriptsto write the screenplay for Citizen Kane with Herman Mankiewicz although their screenplay is very different from the novel. The novel won Huxley the 1939 James Tait Black Memorial Prize which boosted sales. This was the first book Huxley published after moving to California. American readers were fascinated it was his Hollywood novel skewering U.S. wealth immortality obsessions and LA culture. That made it especially marketable in the States. While Harper didnt announce exact numbers typical serious novels of the late 1930s might have 20005000 copies per printing. Ten printings could easily mean 2500040000 copies sold in the first year a strong commercial showing for a literary novel at the time. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket.
