Small embossed stamp in lower right corner.</p> <p> From the portrait of Huxley painted in 1883 by his son-in-law pre-Raphaelite painter John Collier. This version of the print is very scarce; this is the first copy we have seen or handled in over 50 years. Based on the large brow ridges shown on the skull that Huxley is holding in the portrait it is probable that Huxley is holding a Neanderthal skull the significance of which Huxley originally publicized in his Man's Place in Nature 1863. Collier was married to two of Huxley's daughters: First to Marian Mady a talented painter in her own right; and after Mady's death to her younger sister Ethel. The original of Collier's portrait now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. </p> . unknown books

Exploring human evolution some seven years before Darwin's Descent of Man First edition first issue presentation copy inscribed in a secretarial hand "from the author" on the half-title. Evidence is Huxley's key work deliberately written for a non-specialist audience and among his most influential contributions to the theory of human evolution being the first to bring together anatomical and embryonic evidence. In the Origin of Species Darwin carefully avoided the implications of his theory for humanity but Huxley boldly brought them to the fore. In the early 1860s Richard Owen had asserted that human and ape brains were fundamentally different and that the hippocampus minor was exclusively found in humans. In Evidence Huxley uses extensive dissectional evidence to disprove this emphasizing the human-ape commonality and relying on Darwinian evolution for his theoretical underpinnings. The work was also among the first to publicize the discovery of Neanderthal man. The first issue prints the frontispiece on the verso of the second leaf forming an integral part of the preliminaries and the "Advertisement to the Reader" appears on the recto of the fourth. Huxley who earned the nickname 'Darwin's Bulldog' for his outspoken defense of the theory of evolution through natural selection wrote this present work in response to the well-known <i>Hippocampus minor</i> controversy of the 1860s. Huxley challenged the paleontologist Richard Owen who asserted that a human's brain differed qualitatively from those of other mammals.
