WIlde father of Oscar was a polymath - a doctor census taker folklorist and social commentator. He represents as does this essay a conundrum. He sympathized with the Irish peasantry could see many of their troubles with clarity collected huge amounts of medical data on their suffering yet supported the insupportable English response to the famine.
