The illustrated dust jacket has wear tears soiling and chips. A grotesque dwarf falls in love with the beautiful Infanta. Oscar Fingal O'Fflahertie Wills Wilde 16 October 1854 – 30 November 1900 was an Irish author poet and playwright. After writing in different literary styles throughout the 1880s he became one of the most popular and influential dramatists in London in the early 1890s. He was a key figure in the emerging Aestheticism movement of the late 19th century and is regarded by many as the greatest playwright of the Victorian era. Wilde is best known for his Gothic novel The Picture of Dorian Gray 1890 his epigrams plays and bedtime stories for children. Leonard B. Lubin 1943-1994 was an artist who worked prominently in children's books illustrating such titles as The Perfect Peach by Stephen Schwartz 1982 Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp 1982 Sing a Song of Sixpence 1987 Christmas Gift-Bringers 1989 and the second and third books in the Rats of NIMH series by Jane Leslie Conly. It was the birthday of the Infanta. She was just twelve years of age and the sun was shining brightly in the gardens of the palace. Although she was a real Princess and the Infanta of Spain she had only one birthday every year just like the children of quite poor people so it was naturally a matter of great importance to the whole country that she should have a really fine day for the occasion. And a really fine day it certainly was. "The Birthday of the Infanta" is a historical fiction short story for children by the Irish author Oscar Wilde. It was first published in the 1891 anthology House of Pomegranates which also includes "The Young King' "The Fisherman and his Soul" and "The Star-Child". The action of "The Birthday of the Infanta" takes place in Spain at an unspecified point in the past. It is the twelfth birthday of the Infanta the only daughter and only child of the King of Spain. For her entertainment an ugly young dwarf dancer is brought to the court. The Dwarf is completely unaware of how hideous he looks and does not realize that the reason that others laugh in his presence is because they are mocking his appearance. When the Dwarf sees his own reflection for the first time in his life the consequences are severe. Viking Press hardcover
