Very Good/The last of the John Lane "Bodley Head" editions of the classic collaboration between Aubrey Beardsley and Oscar Wilde. Lane was the first English publisher of the work in 1894 but it was dropped after the 1930 edition as Allen Lane John's nephew transformed the houseinto the more mainstream Penguin Books. This is the large paper quarto version the book also appeared in a smaller octavo format. Despite the detailed list of defects this is an unusually well-preserved copy. Quarto 26cm; xviii 65 pages 16 leaves of plates. Bound in original red cloth stamped in blind with Aubrey Beardsley poppy design . Original dust jacket with the same design in red on a tan ground. Dust jacket mildly frayed at spine ends corners and top edge with a closed tear on the upper panel repaired with cello tape and a closed tear on the lower panel without intervention yet unusually sound and entire. "A volume of short poems characterized by Oscar Wilde as 'verses full of sweet sadness and yet full of joy;' they were written by a young English friend of his of whom he speaks at length in his introduction" Publishers' Weekly October 7 1882. Rodd's dedication to Wilde reads: "To Oscar Wilde - 'Heart's Brother' - These Few Songs and Many Songs to Come." In addition to this effusive dedication "for which Wilde clearly was responsible the book was 'edited' by the omission of two poems Lucciole and Maidenhair.At the same time Wilde added nine of Rodd's poems which had not previously been collected" Mason p.185. In a letter to Thomas Mosher who reprinted this book Stoddart replies to Mosher's questions as to the number printed: "I think this deluxe issue was not over 250 copies." Wilde wrote the essay as an entry in the Chancellor's English essay prize contest at Oxford in 1879. The ms. except for a portion in the Clark Library was not recovered until the edition had progressed so it appears in fragments split between 2 volumes and then is finally collected as a complete entity in the 1909 Miscellanies volume. This printing is unrecorded by Millard and was not present in the Dulau catalogue so one might suspect a false imprint date. A copy did appear in the 1924 Quinn sale with the date represented as literal. Mason makes reference to this title but does not list a separate citation for it.
