19096207<p><strong>First edition of the complete translation of Wilde's '<em>The Young King</em>' in book format. First edition of this translation. </strong></p><p>This story was first translated into Russian and published in the magazine '<em>Pravda</em>' in June 1905. It subsequently appeared several times in different collections but in an abridged version most likely because the censorship authorities deemed that the story depicted injustices in the social system and ways to address them which could be potentially dangerous for the regime at that time Roznatovskaia 2000.<br />The translation was prepared by Wilde's foremost translator <strong>Mikhail Likiardopulo</strong> Popandopulo; 1883–1925 a journalist and secretary of the symbolist magazine '<em>Vesy</em>'. Likiardopulo produced fine translations of almost all of Wilde's works. He was acquainted with Alfred Douglas and Robert Ross who allowed him to copy Wilde's '<em>Florentine Tragedy</em>' a fragment of a never-completed play. Likiardopulo was reputedly a spy for Russia Greece and England. In 1919 he emigrated to Great Britain and his translations ceased to be published in Russia.<br />The illustrations and cover design were crafted by Armenian painter and art critic <strong>Vardges Sureniants</strong> 1860–1921. Sureniants studied at the Moscow School of Painting Sculpture and Architecture as well as the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. The illustrations were reproduced by zincography and the title text and headpieces are printed in brown.</p><p>OCLC locates three copies of this edition: in the British Library the Stanford Library and the UCLA Library.</p><p><em><strong>Please be advised that certain books in our collection may require an export permit for international shipping. Some works have different translators listed. Pages moderately tanned and occasionally foxed throughout. Additional notable staining and small holes present. Paper appears to be slightly different colours in places. Print occasionally slightly faint. Binding is firm however book is well read with visible binding thread in places. pp 151-154 slightly loose. Boards have heavy edge wear with bumping and fraying to corners and rub wear all over. Scarce catalogue of the 1969 exhibition of Arte Povera and Conceptual Art less known but as innovative and groundbreaking as the same year's more-mythologized "When Attitudes Become Form" and similarly an expression of its own curator's personality and vision. "Op Losse Schroeven" and "When Attitudes Become Form" were conceived planned and exhibited more or less concurrently but independently: Stedelijk Museum director de Wilde though supervising one curator and friendly with the other apparently shared no information in either direction despite considerable overlap in vision. If the curators were not well informed on their peer's progress those artists invited to participate in both exhibitions were: one of those artists Ger van Elk "made the curious suggestion that the physical similarity of the two men - each was solidly built bearded and bohemian in style - made it interesting for an artist to work with them both as their quickly staggered studio visits turned into a kind of performance; that of a curator chased by his doppelgänger" Rattemeyer. Solid and VG- to VG in its gray boards over navy-blue leather spine. Mild spotting to the boards especially at the rear board a degree of chipping along the spine affecting the gilt-titling and the gilt-rule. Lovely former owner bookplate to the front pastedown offsetting at the colophon darkening along the rear blank endsheet. Still though a very presentable copy and uncommon as such with Aubrey Beardsley's 15 magnificent plates including frontispiece and title page beautifully complementing Oscar Wilde's text. #283 of 825 copies issued. unknown
