Exceedingly scarce first edition with the publisher's printed crest appearing on the cover of the wrappers as well as on the title page. and a vignette woodcut appears on the last page. The prestigious Newdigate Prize Oxford's top award for poetry dates to early 1800's and the winner for 1878 was the young Oscar Wilde. The pamphlet was issued in the same year as was common with many of the early prize winners and is considered Wilde's first publication in book form. He worked on the poem a few years earlier while touring Greece as a student at Oxford. An exemplary the finest we have seen with no wrinkling or central creases as was commonly seen from folding to place in a pocket. Very small nick out of two corners very slight barely detectable browning to covers else extremely clean and bright. Extremely scarce in this condition. 16pp. <br/><br/> Thos. The youngest editor at Life Magazine at age 25 Warga reported on John F. Kennedy’s race for the Presidency and went on to cover the Civil Rights movement for the magazine. For many years Warga was one of the leading writers at the Los Angeles Times where he did in depth articles and features on writers and people in the arts. Wilde went on to become one of Hollywood's legendary script supervisors working well into the 1980s sometimes under the name Meta Rebner with an impressive string of credits including TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD THE GRADUATE IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT SHAMPOO and TERMS OF ENDEARMENT. Hardcover. no dust jacket FAIR condition only although solidly bound and internally clean except for the initials of I guess a one-time owner on the front pastedown; externally though it's kind of a mess with a number of small paper bits stuck to the front cover which is also quite soiled and a large ugly stain on the rear cover I suspect the paper bits are remnants of the no-longer-present dust jacket which was probably moisture-adhered to the book at some point. Novel about a sophisticated New York marriage that turns sour. The first of only two published novels by Ms. Wilde a prolific short story writer and sometime playwright who later became better known as a screenwriter notably of the classic screwball comedies BRINGING UP BABY she had also written the original magazine story and shared the screenplay credit with with Dudley Nichols and I WAS A MALE WAR BRIDE both directed by Howard Hawks and for what it's worth both featuring Cary Grant in drag. For those who are interested in such minutae the dedicatee of this novel "E.V.H." was undoubtedly her second of four husbands Ernest Victor Heyn. This novel was her first entree to Hollywood as it was announced that Paramount had purchased the movie rights although no movie was ever made but it was RKO's later purchase of the Collier's story that became BRINGING UP BABY that firmly established her screenwriting career. .
