100835
Pall Mall London. . Fine. - Four pages consisting of over 400 words penned on all four sides of 6-7/8 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide "The Atheneum Pall Mall. S.W." stationery with a pictorial blind crest embossed at top left of the first page. The popular Anglo-Welsh school poet Lewis Morris responds to the American impressario and lecture manager Major Pond's inquiry about lecturing in America. Writing from the "Reform Club" he says ". the trick is that with a somewhat expensive family my margin of income over expenditure is so small that I should be very slow to run any risk whatever." Though he is hesitant he is "well enough known in America" to ensure success. "The other doubt arises from the fact that my poems are in no degree humorous but rather of a sober character." Signed in full "Lewis Morris". Near fine.

The Welsh academic and politician Sir Lewis Morris 1833-1907 was a popular poet of the Anglo-Welsh school. A lawyer he was unsuccessful as the liberal candidate for Pembroke Boroughs and Carmarthen Boroughs. He was best known as a poet of the Anglo-Welsh school and was knighted by Queen Victoria. His association with Oscar Wilde probably cost him being appointed Poet Laureate. Among his most famous poems is "Love's Suicide".
Pall Mall, London.

Wilde explains that he had previously written regarding the case but 'by some accident the Letter has been mislaid I believe among my mass of papers and I therefore fear it may not have reached you as I cannot learn who among the Servants dispatched it'. In the lost letter he stated that the wishes of his correspondent 'had been anticipated by the case respecting the Lithgon Family having been answered and also stating that the only point submitted to me regarded the legal presumption of Survivorship among several persons the respective times of whose Deaths could not be ascertained'. The context of the letter has not been discovered. Dover Street; 9 January [1841]. unknown

1902140214Washington: Snohomish 1902. First edition of Wilde's classic Hellenic poem. Octavo original boards illustrated with engravings and hand painted initials embellished in gilt frontispiece by John Dennis Clancy. In very good condition. Wilde’s “theme is not as is often supposed art’s divorce from life but its inescapable arraignment by experience. His creative works almost always end in unmasking. The hand that adjusts the green carnation suddenly shakes an admonitory finger. While the ultimate virtue in Wilde’s essays is in make-believe the denouement of his dramas and narratives is that masks have to go. We must acknowledge what we are. Wilde at least was keen to do so. Though he offered himself as the apostle of pleasure his created world contains much pain†Ellmann xvi. Snohomish hardcover
